Description

M E. HTCH.
LINING, MARKING, COPYING, OR OTHER INDICATING GUIDE.
APPLICATION FILED APR.6,1916.

ATTORNEYS WITNESSES onnron.
MARY E. FITCH, OF BROOKLINE, 1VEA$SACHUSETTS.
LINING, MARKING, COPYING, OR OTHER INDICATING GUIDE.
Application filed April 6, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. Frrorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lining, Marking, Copying, or other Indicating Guide, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a liner, marker,
copying, or other guide for reading matter,
instructlons, etc., after the manner of a book-marker the same comprising a plate or body portion, a tongue thereon, and a pointer or index movable on said tongue, said tongue being integral with said body and constructed to admit a leaf, sheet, etc., thereunder, without creasing the latter, and also preventing improper displacement of the index from the tongue.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a liner or other indicating guide embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof on the line 22 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on the line 3-3 Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4. represents an elevation of a portion of the body of the device on the scale Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the index employed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a bar with graduations thereon and having in its body in the longitudinal direction thereof the slot or passage 2 which is occupied by the tongue 3, which is punched out of said bar between the sides thereof, and has what may be termed its head end 4: integrally connected with the corresponding portion of the bar forming a flexible or pliable joint or hinge for the tongue with the bar, whereby the tongue is somewhat resilient, and it may be moved out from the bar to allow a leaf, a sheet or the like to be passed under the tongue, while the adjacent portions of said leaf, etc., may rest on said bar, and the device may be held immovable on the leaf, etc.

tongue and body of the bar to admit the leaf,
etc., without pressing the latter into the.
passage 2 and creasing the same, said head end l of the tongue is thrown out forming the shoulder 5, which raises the tongue from the body of the bar and forms a space be tween said bar and tongue, as most plainly shown in Fig. 2, whereby the leaf, etc., resting on the body of the bar will not be pressed by the tongue into the slot or passage 2 and creased, while said tongue may be fitted on a leaf or a. number of leaves of a book to hold the device on the latter, while the index is free to slide on the face of said tongue and consequently over the exposed leaf of the book.
On the tongue 3 is the slide 6 which freely clasps the same so that it may be moved in either direction thereon. On the outer face of said slide is the mark 7 acting as an index adapted to register with the line of printing or matter on the leaf, etc., and so point to the same so as to assist the reader line for line on said leaf, or direct attention to a line for continuing reading subsequently after the manner of a book marker, or pre serving a place or line for subsequent reference. Owing to the set out or offset head 4 of the tongue 3 the latter andthe slide thereon are thrown out from the plate 1 avoiding any hump on the back of the device, and so the latter may lie flat in position without liability to wabble or rock as will be apparent in Fig. 2. On the free end of the tongue which is opposite to the joint or hinge thereof is the laterally projecting shoulder 8 which is formed preferably by widening said end, whereby it forms a stop member for the slide 6 and prevents the latter from improper disconnection from the tongue.
On the faces of the side members of the body of the bar are numbered graduations in say inches and fractions thereof for measuring purposes.
On the face of the tongue are graduations corresponding to say the distances between lines of reading matter, instructions, etc., so that the index may be set with precision on said tongue relative to said lines.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A liner composed of a. bar, a tongue formed of the body of the same punched-out therefrom between the sides thereof having its head end connected integrally with the head of said bar, and being oflset outwardly formed of the body of the same punched-out from the head of said bar. therefrom between the sides thereof having 2. A liner composed of a bar, a tongue its head end connected integrally with the formed of the body of the same punched-out head of said bar, said tongue and said sides 15 5 therefrom between the sides thereof having having graduations thereon, and the face its head end connected integrally with the of said slide having thereon a mark adapted head of said bar, and being olfset outwardly to register With either of said graduations.
from the head of said bar, the free terminal MARY E. FITCH. of said tongue having thereon a laterally Witnesses: 10 turned shoulder. A. F. CLARKE,
3. A liner composed of a bar, a tongue M. A. CHIsHoLM.
