To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn BENBENEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duquoin, in the county of Perry, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to button fastenlngs.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved button fastening so constructed that same is adapted to be utilized in conjunction with the device or tool for applying the fastening for the purpose of punching a hole in fabric or other materials through which the fastening is adapted to be inserted in subsequent application thereof.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a button secured to a fabric through the medium of the improved fastening;

Referring to the drawings 10 indicates a button which may be of any suitable shape and of any desired material. Secured to the inner side of the button 10 is an eye 11 and attached to this eye is a fastening device or rivet 12. This device comprises a hollow conical shape member 13 constructed preferably of thin metal and having both its major and minor ends open, the former being surrounded by a flange 14:. Extending across the major end of the member 13 is a bridge pin 15 which is engaged through the eye 11 for the purpose of securing the button 10 to the member 13.

t will be noted that by the use of the tool shown in Fig. 5 the member 13 is utilized to punch a hole in the desired fabric, the method of accomplishing this end being fully described in my copending application filed June 23, 1915, Serial No. 35,- 966 and of which this application is a division.

To apply the button to the fabric the eye 11 thereof is engaged in the recess 21 of the tool A. The member 13 is then passed through the hole in the fabric until the latter engages the flange 14. The stud 22 of the tool is then engaged in the minor end of the member 13 and the jaws 16 and 17 of the tool forced toward each other to upset or crush the member 13 and thus rivet the button to the fabric, the latter being confined between the flange 14 and the upset portion of the member 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

What is claimed is A button fastening consisting of a button proper, an eye member secured centrally to the inner side of said button, a fastening member comprising a collapsible tapering tubular member having a lateral flange surrounding its major end, and a bridge pin, extending across the major end of the mem ber and engaged through the eye member.
