Application filed February 13, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN B. MERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beach View, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Valve- Spring Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a valve spring lifter.
It has for its object to provide a device by means of which a spring holding a valve to a valve seat may be conveniently and quickly raised out of disengagement with the pin by means of which a valve stem is held in position.
Vith the above and other objects in view, which will be more fully explained in the following specication, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved valve spring lifter, a screw member not being shown, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line A-A of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an elevational view partly in section of the lower portion of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an elevational sectional view showing the device in operation, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modified form of fork member.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a rod the lower end 2 of which is slightly enlarged whereby a fork member 3 pivotally secured to the collar member 4 may be prevented from sliding off the lower end of said rod. On the rod 1 is another collar 5 to the lower portion of which the screw-carrying arm 6 is pivoted by means of a pin 7. The end 8 of the member 6 is enlarged and internally screw-threaded for engagement with the screw 9 to the lower end of which is a swivel member 10, adapted to engage the valve 11 mounted on the valve stem 12. If desired, the end 14 of the member 6 may be roughened as indicated as at 15. The fork member 3 may be pivoted at 13 to the upper edge of the collar 4 and the inner end of this member 3 may be roughened as indicated at 16. rlhe screw member 9 is provided with nger engaging wings 9, whereby, when the tool is placed in position as in F ig. 4, the screw 9 maybe turned, the inner ends of the members 3 and 6 binding against the rod 1, whereby the whole device is held Specicaton of Letters Patent.

in rigid connection and thespring 16 raised, so that the pin 17 may be easily removed and the valve stem'12 loosened for removal.
A center gage is shown on the member 3 which consists of two extensible parts or members 18 and 19. The member 19 has sliding engagement with the arm 3 and is formed with the elongated slots 20, the studs 21 protruding through these slots and being headed to prevent displacement and the fork 22 is formed integral with the member' 19 which is extensible. Mounted upon the sliding member 19 is the sliding member 18 which is formed with the elongated slots 23, through which the studs 21 also project, and formed integrally upon said member 18 is a U-shaped member 24 rising above the body of said member. ln practice the member 19 will be extended and will straddle the part of the valve stem (see Fig. 4) below the ring 25, while the member 18 is extended so as to enable the U-shaped member 24 to surround in part, the periphery of said ring 25 in order to center the valve spring lifter in a direct line with the swivel point 10 on the screw-bolt 9. The member 24 acts, therefore, as a centering gage which causes the member 22 to find its place aroundthe valve stem.
The collars 4 and 5 are large enough to permit wedge members 26 and 27 to be inserted between the ends of the members 3 and 6 and the rod 1. The members 26 and 27 are provided with shoulders 28 and 29 adapted to engage the ends 14 and 14 of said members 6 and 3 whereby they are held against displacement. When pressure is brought to bear against the outer ends of the arms 3 and 6, the ends 14 and 14 press against the members 26 and 27 causing their entire surfaces 30 and 31 to engage the rod 1. By this means a much greater frictional surface is obtained thereby, causing less chance of the arms slipping on the rod 1.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the construction of my device without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
However, that which I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination a rod, two serrated members arranged to bear against said rod, two collars surrounding said rod and said members, means for holding said members against displacement from said collars, two arms fulcrumed at their inner ends upon said collars and arranged towedge said members against said rod, a valve-rod receiving member carried by one of said arms7 and a vertically movable screw carried by the other arm and opposed to said member.
2. ln combination, a rod, a collar ar-V ranged to bear against said rod at one side,

4. In combination a rod, an arm projecting therefrom, said arm being bifurcated, a U-shaped member slidably mounted on said arm and a second arm slidable on said rod adapted to coact with said first arm to raise a spring. 5. The described device consisting of a rod, an arm slidably mountedV thereon, a forked arm extending at right angles to said rod, and a relatively shorter and Wider U- shaped member slidably adjustable on said forked arm.
