Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NnLs V. JENSEN, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Paper-File, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to improvements of the old style pointed spindle adapted to securely hold receipts, bills and other like papers and my said invention primarily has for its object to eliminate accidental injury on the sharp point heretofore exposed, not when placing papers upon it, but by coming in contact with said point, accidentally.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved paper file in which the pointed end of the spindle is normally held covered within a combined tubular spindle and guard, onto which the papers are filed, and a simple means for ejecting the spindle to puncture the papers as they are held down against the upper end of the tubular spindle to thereby facilitate the iiling of the said papers thereon.

lVith other objects in view that will appear, my invention embodies the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter explained7 specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved paper file, the parts being shown at their normal position in full lines, the puncturing spindle and the means for ejecting the same beyond the upper end of the tubular spindle being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a cross section. thereof taken on the line 3-3 on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 illustrates the rocking lever, and the linger pressed member that connects therewith, the parts being separated.

In the practical arrangement my invention comprises a metallic base 1, that includes a narrow front end, in the pendent sides 2 of which is held a cross screw bolt 3, the head of which seats in the countersunl; aperture 31 in one of the sides 2 and the other threaded end screws into a threaded aperture 312L in the other side member 2, as is best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

4l designates a lever that extends lengthwise under the frame 1 and it is rockably 'supported on the bolt 8, by the cap member 5 that fits over the bolt 3 and has apertured laterals to receive the screws 51-51 that engage the threaded apertures l0 in the said lever 4. The inner end of the lever 1 is beveled on the upper face as at 41, the purpose of which will presently appear.

6 designates a pusher key that works through an aperture 11 inthe front end of the base l and has a threaded end for threading into the lever as shown.

7 designates a tubular spindle, whose lower end threads into a threaded tap 12 in the. base and 8 is a sharp pointed spindle that is slid into the tubular spindle through the bottom end thereof and whose lower end has a head SO to prevent the said spindle from dropping through the tubular member T when the device is held upside down.

The tubular spindle 7 and the pointed spindle S are of such relative lengths that the spindle S, whose head end rests on the beveled end of the lever l has its pointed end S1 normally within the upper end of the member 7 and in consequence is never eX- posed except when filing a paper, it being understood that in using the file, when a paper is placed over the upper end of the tubular paper holding spindle 7, the operator by pressing down on the pusher key 6, that tilts the lever e', ejects the spindle 8 above the tubular means 7 and punctures the paper to be filed, the bevel end of the lever causing the head 80 to ride freely on the said end of the lever until the bevel end engages the underside of the base.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, the complete construction, the manner in which the device is used and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent.

What I claim is:

1. A paper le comprising a base, a tubular spindle mounted thereon, av puncturing spindle normally incased within the said tubular spindle and linger operated means on the base for engaging and projecting the puncturing spindle above the tubular spindle, Y
