To all whom it may concern i Be it known that'I, MELVILLE PQHAY- WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer-' tam new and useful Improvements in Apple-Corers; and I .do hereby declare-the following to be a 'full',fclear', and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'ap pertains to make and use the same.
The present lnvention relates tOIIIlPI'OVG ments 1n apple corers.
A serious detriment tofthe longerlife of service of the type of apple corer to which this invention relates resides in the weakness of the point of the corer, which is first thrust into the apple in the apple-coring operation. e
The object of thepresentinvention, then,
is to produce an applecorer with a reinforced point.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation ofthe. im-
proved apple corer; Fig. 2 isa rear eleva-f tion of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation,
partly in section; Fig. 4: iS anlend elevation ofthe cutting end of the corer; and Fig. 5 is a sectional View on lined-,5 of Fig. 1.
Theimproved apple corer, which may be? made of any suitable metal, such as, tin, comprises a tapering cylindrical body 6,
provided with a handle 7 rigidly secured to its larger end Cutting edges 8 are formed on the smaller end of the cylindricalbody by removingthe materialtherefrom on an oblique orslanting line running from the end 9 back as far as the point 10; Asmay be observed from 3, the cuttingedges I Specification of Letters Eatent. V
are formed on a long taper. In order that the cutting edges may cut freely, they flare outwardly slightly, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. A core dischargerecess 11 is interposed in the body of the corer for discharging the removed cores, and is provided with a shelving wall 12, on'itsrear end in I Patented Jan. 23,11 917. Application filed February is, 1915.. Serial No. 7,938.
order to facilitate the discharge of the core,
and also to prevent the core from slipping :down into the larger end of the'cylinder.
This construction also conduces to the ready cleaning of the corer. A reinforcing rib 13 is'formed on the pointer thrusting end of the ,corer, by making a depression longitudinal of the corer body in'the bottom of the concaved surface between'the two cutting edges 8. Itis obvious thatthis depression may extend from theinside outwardly, or from the outer side inwardly. Providing the point ofthe corer with thisreinforcing rib prevents the point from crumpling up under the stressof continued use in being thrust into apples, "or in case the corer should fall and land upon its point.
The result is'thatthe operation of coring apples may be performed more expeditiously and efiiciently, and the corer. assured of a longer life of service. Having thus describe "I claim is: a v An apple corer comprising a cylindrical;
d my invention what,
body terminating in a slanting cutting end having a cutting edge,'and being provided with areinforcing rib located at the extremity and forming a part of the cutting edge; I Y o I MELVILLE P.
