ENOCH OHNSTRAND, F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER M. EDWARDS, 0F SYRAGUSE, NEW YORK.
Application led July 29, 1911.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ENooH OHNs'rnAND, of-
Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sheet-Metal Filing-Box, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a sheet metal filing or index card box, and it consists in the novel combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding 1.5 parts in all the views..
Figure 1 is a plan of a section of the box. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively vertical longitudinal and cross sectional views. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the face plates.
My invention is here shown as embodied in a box composed of a central section and end sections hinged thereto and movable into and out of closed positions with respect to the central section, each section being a box in itself and having a guide'for index or other cards therein.
The central section comprises side and end members or flanges 1,- :2, and reversely arranged members 3 comprising bottoms arranged back to back' and side flanges 4 interlocked with the side members 1, the bottoms being also formed with corrugations 5 arranged about midway between and parallelV to the side members, the corrugations serv- 85 ing as guides for the cards filed in the box.
One set of the interlocking parts here shown as the side members 1 are formed with internal channels facing toward each other,
and the other set of interlocking parts as the flanges 4 are provided with means fitting said channels, Fig. 3. The end membersQ are also formed with internal channels similar to those of the side members 1, Fig. 2.
Preferably a metal sheet 6 is interposed between the bottoms of the members 8 and the edges thereof abut against the inner members 1 and 2. The central section also comprises reversely arranged face plates 7 arranged on opposite sides of the members 3,
said plates interlocking with the channels of the end members 2 and having slots S for receiving the corrugations 5, Fig. 4.
The channels of the side and end members 1, 2 are preferably rectangular and the flanges 4 of the members 3 have their mar- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

gins bent at a right angle to the major part of such flange, said margins 9 fitting the channels of the side members 1, and the edgesl thereof abutting against the sides 1. The flanges 4 are also spaced apart from the side members 1 and together' therewith form hollow walls. Preferably said corrugations 5 are also rectangular in form but obviously may be of any other form.
As shown in Fig. 3, the upper and lower margins 10 and 11 of the face plates 7 are bent ata right angle to said plates and fit into the channels of the end members 2, the flanges 11 resting on the end margins of the metal sheet 6, Fig. 2.
The side and end members or flanges 1, 2 and also the'margins thereof forming the internal channels are united at the corners in any suitable manner as by welding.
The end sections or boxes are hinged respectively at 12 and V13 to the central section or box, and each end section comprises a sheet metal body includinga bottom 14 and side and end flanges 15 and 16 usually integral with the bottom, and a sheet metal member engaging the bottom 14 and having flanges 17 interlocking with the side flanges 15 and a central rectangular corrugation or guide 18 similar to the corrugation or guide 5.
One set of interlocking flanges, here shown as the side fianges 15, are formed with channels facing the bottom and the other, as the flanges 17, are provided with means fitting the bottoms of the channels. As here shown the margins 19 of the side flanges 17 are bent at a right angle to such flanges and coact with channels of the sides in a manner similar to the margins 9 of the members 3 of the central section.
Each of the end sections also comprises a lfaceplate 20 at each end thereof, such face plate being similar to'the face plate 7 and coacting with the channel of each end member and with the corrugation 18 in substantially the same manner as the plates 7 coact with the channels of the ends 2, and the corrugation 5 of the central section.
In use the box can be opened so that one compartment of the central section and one of the two end sections are accessible. A box constructed as described is particularly rigid and durable and economically manufactured.
