IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-PINS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,303, dated November 28, 1871; antedated November 16, 1871.

To-all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM J. WATTLES, of Rockford, in the county of WVinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to that class of clothespins which is provided with an auxiliary clamp for attaching the pin to the line, in addition to the ordinary means for holding the clothes; and consists in certain details of construction, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawing is shown a side elevation of my improved pin.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

A A represent the parts of the pin designed for holding the clothes, these parts being constructed much like the ordinary spring clothespin. One of the parts is provided at the joint, as will be observed, with a concave face, and the "other with a convex. B represents the spring,

one end of which is fixedly secured to the inner member A. The other end, being carried through the joint after being coiled and bent as shown, is caused to rest in a slight groove in the outer face of the pin. 0 represents an auxiliary leg, which forms, with the member A, a clamp for attaching the pin to the line.

The operation will be readily understood. The springclamp is employed for gripin g the clothes, while the other is employed for securing the pin to the line.

All the advantages incidental to this class of pins are secured by this construction, with certain others, relating to their cheapness of construction and the facility with which they are manufactured.

Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A spring-clamp constructed as described, and provided with an auxiliary leg, as and for the purpose set forth.
