Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNZo E. RHoADns, a resident of Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Motions for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists in operative connections between the harnesses of a loom and their operating cams which impart to all of the harnesses movements which are equal and uniform.
The improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1, is a front view of the harnesses and their operating mechanism. Fig. 2, is a vertical section in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section in the plane indicated by the line 33 in Fig. 1. Figs. 4: and 5, are detail views.
The present improvement is particularly concerned with looms which employ a large number of harnesses, and in the drawings five harnesses A, B, C, D, and E, are shown. The harnesses all derive their movements from cams F, one for each harness, located on the rotating shedding shaft G, which receives its motion from the picker cam shaft of the loom in any usual way, a gear H, on the shedding cam shaft G, being illustrated as a part of the gearing between the shedding cam shaft and the picker cam shaft. Each cam F, cooperates with a lengthwise extending treadle I, pivoted at its rear end, as shown at a, in Fig. 2. Each treadle I, is not connected directly with its own harness but indirectly through the mechanism illustrated, with the exception of the middle harness C. The cams and the treadles are located at the middle of the loom.
The middle harness C, is directly connected with the middle treadle I, by a suitable connector extending upwardly and vertically from the treadle which, as shown, is a strap J. This strap J, (Fig. 5) is connected to the middle treadle. by means of a link K, and it is connected at its top with a loop L, depending from the middle of the harness C.
The other four harnesses are not connected directly to the remaining treadles I, but are connected therewith through independent levers.
The front harness A, is connected to a lever M, which extends transversely of the loom being pivoted to a portion of the loom frame at .7). The inner end of this lever M, extends to the middle of the loom Where it is notched at 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and a, to engage the. lower end of a loop N, secured to the middle of the harness A, and extend ing downwardly and vertically therefrom. This lever M, is connected to the left hand treadle I, by means of a connector consisting of strap J, which is connected to said treadle by means of a link K. At its upper end this strap is connected to a stirrup 0, (Fig. 4) which hooks over the lever M, and is retained in a notch c, therein. The strap J, connected with the lever M, extends downwardly and vertically as shown in Fig. 1.
The second harness B, is connected with one of the treadles I, by means of an intermediate lever P. This lever P, extends crosswise of the loom and is pivoted to a portion of its framework at (Z, as shown in Fig. 3. This lever P, is connected with its treadle I, by means of a strap J, link K, and stirrup O, as in the case of the lever M. This lever P, extends to the middle of the loom and is there connected with the middle of its harness B, in the same manner that the lever M, is connected with its harness.
The harness D, is connected with its treadle I, through an intermediate lever Q. This lever Q, extends crosswise of the loom and is pivoted at its outer end at o, to a portion of the framework of the loom. This lever Q, extends to the middle of the loom where it is connected to the middle of the harness D, in the same way that the harness A,'is connected to its lever M. This lever- Q, is connected to its treadle I, by a strap J, link K, and stirrup O, in the same way that lever M, is connected to its treadle.
The rear harness E, which is shown elevated in the drawings, is connected with the right hand treadle I, by means of an intermediate lever R. This lever B, extends crosswise of the loom and is pivoted at (Z, to a part of the frame work. This lever B, extends to the middle of the loom and is there connected to the middle of the harness E, in the same manner in which harness A, is connected to lever M. The lever B, is connected to its treadle I, by means of a strap J, link K, and stirrup O, in the same manner that the lever M, is connected to its treadle I.
It is obvious that this manner of connecting harnesses to their treadles by means of 7 intermediate crosswise extending levers can be extended to any number of harnesses.
Theintermediate levers are arranged in two groups pivoted at opposite sides of the loom thereby enabling them tob'e as compactly arranged as are'the harnesses, and to have wide pivotal'bearings. Each intermediate lever is immediately below its own harness and in the same plane. Each lever is connected to its treadle by means of a direct downwardly extending vertical connection. Each lever extends to the middle of the loom and is connected to the middle of its own harness by a direct upwardly extending vertical connection. 7
The result of this construction is that each of a large number of harnesses is connected 'at its middle to its immediately controlling member with the result that the movements Each of all of the harnesses are identical. harness is moved from its middle so that it moves'squarely up and down with no tend ency to move askew.
The ordinary way in power looms having harness cams at the middle of the loom on a cam shaft is to connect each harness directly with its treadle with the result that each harness except the one connected with the middle treadle is unevenly pulled. This uneven pulling is apt to tilt the harness so thatthe warp threads governed by it do not form a uniformly open shed. The
' shed opening is apt to be wider at one side wise extending treadlesiat the middle of the loom one for each harness, the; middle treadle being directly connected .to the middle of one of the harnesses by a direct vertical upwardly extending connector, and two groups of intermediate crosswise extending levers, the levers of one group being pivoted at oneside of the loom' and of the other group at the other-side of the loom, each lever extending to the middle of the loom and being'there'connected by a vertical upwardly extending connector to the middle of its harness, and each lever being connected to its treadle by a vertical downwardly extending connector.

A loom having, in combination, a plurality of harnesses, a plurality of lengthwise extending treadles at the middle of the loom one for each harness and two groups of intermediate crosswise extending levers, the levers of one group being pivoted at one side of the loom and of theother group at the other side of the loom, each lever extending to the middle of thelocm and being there connected by an upwardly extending connector to the middle of its harness, and each lever being connected to its treadle by a downwardly extending connector.
