To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. BARNWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in cuspidors, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be constructed in such manner that the cover thereof will be normally closed, but may be readily raised by operation of a lever.

The invention has for a still further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and increase the efiiciency thereof without materially increasing the cost of the same.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cuspidor with the cover partially raised; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view with the operating lever and guide for the same shown in section.

Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the cuspidor and 2 the removable jar for the same, while the cover is designated by the numeral 3. A cover 3 is hinged at one point to the upper edge of the body 1 upon the hinge pin l and has the arm 5 projecting therefrom, the inner ends of said arm, before being connected with the cover 3, being bifurcated to avoid the upstanding guide rod 6, which has its upper end directed outwardly, as shown at 7, and provided with an eye 8 with a set screw 9 carried thereby, the purpose of which will presently appear. the cover raising rod 10, which has the knob 11 formed, upon its upper end, while its lower end is loosely connected with the arm 5, whereby the cover 3 may be swung upon the pivot pin 4 to open position, by pressing downwardly upon the head 11 of the rod 10. The rod 10 may be secured against movement to retain the cover 3 in either open or closed position, by tightening the set screw 9. It will therefore be seen that I have provided a sanitary cuspidor which will be of extremely simple construction and operation, and it will be readily apparent that the cover 3 may be readily raised or swung to open position and, if desired, secured in open position or closed position. It will further be apparent that the cover 3 will automatically return to closed position when the operating means-for said cover is released.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

What is claimed is A device of the class described including a cylindrical body, a cover hingedly secured to the open end of said body, an outwardly extending and upwardly inclined arm having one end bifurcated, said bifurcated arm secured to said cover, a guide arm having its lower end extending through the bifurcated portion of the firstmentioned arm and secured to said body, its upper end projecting beyond the cover, said first mentioned arm adapted to raise the cover to an upward position, and means on the second named arm cooperating with the operating arm for holding the cover in a raised or lowered position. r
