Application led May 31, 1916. Serial N o. 100,821.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY MIoHELsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garwin, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented new 'and useful Improvements in Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvedoiler for use in oiling machinery and the like, the object of the invention beingl to provide an improved device of this kind embodying an air pump for compressing air in the body of the oiler to force oil therefrom and also embodying a valve to control the delivery of oil and means to operate said controlling valve.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the' accompanying `drawings :-Figure -1 is a sectional view of an oiler constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the same at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same with the delivery pipe or spout shown in section.
The tank or body 1 of my improved oiler is here shown as cylindrical, having a diametrically enlarged base 2 and also provided with a vtruncated conical bottom 3 which has a threaded iiller opening 4 anda plug 5 screwed in said opening. Aty the upper end of the body or tank is a nipple 6 to which a valve case 7 is screwed as at 8, av liber washer 9 being provided to prevent leakage, and the delivery pipe or spout 10 is screwed to the upper end of the valve case as at` 11. A turning valve plug 12 operates in a transverse opening through the valve case and has a port 13,which when the said valve l plug is turned in one direction, opens the bore of the valve case and when the' valve l plug is turned in the opposite direction,
serves to cut off the same as will be understood. A lever 14 to operate the valve plug is attached as at 15 to the projecting end or head of the valve plug and said lever has a linger piece 15a on its free end. The lever also has an arm 16 which projects from the opposite side of the valve and to which a stop 17 and a spring 18 are secured by a screw 19. The said stop is of inverted 'L- shape and serves to bear against the pipe or spout 10, when the valve plug is in open position to limit the opening movement of such plug. The spring 18 is curved as shown and its free end bears and is slidable on the top of the tank and said spring exerts its tension, when the lever 14 is released by the operator to move said lever upwardly and turn the valve plug to closed position and hold said valve plug normally in such position. l
.An oil intake pipe 20 is attached to the nipple as at 2.1, extends downwardlyl in the center of the tank or body and has an intake arm arranged at an angle as at 22 and which extends to one side of the body at a point near the bottom thereof.
air compressing pump 23 is arranged on the side of the body, opposite the intake end 22 of the pipe 20 and its cylinder 24 is held in an eye 25 of a bracket arm 26 which is attached to the tank. The plunger of the air compressing pump is indicated at 27, the plunger rod at 28,'and the head of the rod at 29, said head forming a cap, which when the plunger is depressed, may be screwed to the upper end of the cylinder to secure the plunger against further operation. p
The pump cylinder has a nipple 32 at its lower end which is secured to the casing 33 of a valve 34 which closes against the back pressure from the tank and permits compressed air to be forced by the air pump to the tank where it presses downwardly on the body of oil in the tank and hence when the valve 13 is opened, causes oil to be forced pneumatically through the pipes 20 and 10, as desired.
The cylinder of the air pump, forms a convenient handle kfor the oiler and enables the user to operate either the pump or the delivery valve by the thumb of the hand with which he grasps the cylinder.
Having described the invention, what is claimed 1s:
In anoiler'of the class described, a tank having a delivery valve and a delivery spout at its upper side, said valve including an element mounted for turning movement, a lever attached to said movable element of the valve to turn the same and provided with an arm,.an inverted L`shaped stop attached to 5 .said arm and arranged lto engage the delivery spoutand limit the movement of said valve element in one direction, and a spring also attached to said arm of the lever slidably bearing on the top of the tank and serving to normally turn the valve to closed 10 position.
