CARL ADOLF BUCHI-IOLTZ, OF I-IOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
FIRE-LIGHTER AND HEATER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL A. BUOI-IHOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ho boken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Fire-Lighter and Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined fire lighter and heater, one of its objects being to provide a simple, compact and attractive device of this character which can be used either as a heater for the purpose of cooking in small utensils, or can be used as a means for igniting fuel in an open grate or in a stove.
A further object is to provide a structure, which when not in use can be folded so as to occupy but little space.
Another object is to provide a novel form of burner whereby kerosene, alcohol or the like can be used as a fuel and the flame constantly controlled.
With the foregoing and other objects which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction, and the combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, a portion of the slidable closure of the burner being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device collapsed, a portion of the handle being removed. Fig. i is an enlarged section through a portion of the burner and closure, said section being taken on the line 4t4.- Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a shallow boXlike burner casing provided with an asbestos filling 2 which is held in position by a coarse metal fabric 3 secured in the casing in any manner desired. The side edges of the casing are bent inwardly throughout the length of the casing to form supporting ledges 4 each overhung by a retaining flange 5.
Secured to the bottom of the casing 1 is a strip 6 having rectangularly disposed ends 7 while its other end terminates in a suit able handle 8. A spring clip 9 is arranged upon the bottom of the strip 6 and is extended toward the casing 1. A guide loop 10 is fixed on and extends upwardly from Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 1, 1916.
Patented J an. 9, 1917.
Serial No. 118,130.
the strip 6 and slidably mounted within this loop is a stem 11 one end of which is pro vided with a handle 12 while its other end is attached to or formed with a slidable closure 13. This closure has inturned side flanges 14, which work between the ledges 4 and the flanges 5.
Pivotally connected to the ends 7 of the strip 6 are the sides 15 of a yoke 16. These sides constitute supporting legs, and each is provided at its free end with a foot 16. A connecting strip 17 is pivotally connected to each leg 15 near the upper end thereof, and these two strips are also pivotally connected to the upper end portions of legs 18, which constitute the sides of a second yoke 19. A cross member 20 is fixedly secured to the legs 18, and is preferably offset from the yoke as will be apparent by referring particularly to Fig. 1. Each of the legs 18 has a foot 21 at its free end.
Under normal conditions, when the device is not in use, the yoke 16 is swung about its connections with the ends 7 so as to bring the feet 16 under and close to the burner casing 1. The yoke 19 is likewise positioned with its feet 21 close to the burner casing so that, by reason of its compact arrangement, the device can be stored in a small space. When it is desired to use the lighter, the yoke 19 is swung to position substantially at right angles to the strip 6 and is then pulled so that motion will be transmitted through the said strips 17 to the yoke 16, and said yoke will likewise be brought to position with its sides at right angles to the strip 6. When the yoke 19 is shifted as described, the cross strip 20 will slide into engagement with the clip 9, and thus be held frictionally against accidental displacement. The device can now be placed on the floor or any other suitable support, and the asbestos filling can be saturated with kerosene, alcohol or the like.
Should it be desired to use the structure as a heater, it would merely be necessary to ignite the fuel after partly or entirely withdrawing the closure 13. A receptacle could then be placed upon the yokes and side strips and be supported thereby.
Should it be desired to use the device as a fire heater, it would merely be necessary to ignite the fuel and then insert the structure under the grate supporting the fuel to be ignited.
A structure such. as herein described is capable of considerable ornamentation, and can be made an attractive implement for use in connection With an open fire place.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a burner casing, a handle extending therefrom, a closure slidably engaging the casing, and a means on the handle for actuating the closure, of supporting legs foldable relative to the casin side connections between the legs and cooperating means upon certain of the legs and the handle for holding all of the legs in active or supporting positions.
2. The combination With a burner casing, a handle extending therefrom and a clip upon the handle, of legs foldable relative to the casing, side connections between the legs, said connections and legs constituting utensil supports and means upon certain of the legs and cooperating with the clip for holding the legs in upstanding or active positions.
3. The combination With a burner casing and a handle strip extending therefrom and having angularly disposed ends extending beyond the casing, and a yoke having its sides pivoted to said ends, a second yoke, side strips connecting the two yokes, a cross strip carried by said second yoke, and means upon the handle strip and cooperating With said cross strip for holding the yokes in upstanding or active positions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWn, I have hereto affixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
CARL ADOLF BUCHHOLTZ.
