Description

w'. R. CLAXTON.
LEGGING.
APPLICATION 'FILED APR-24. 1915.
Patented J an. 9, 1917.
WILLIAM B. 'CLAXTON,
0F BAR'IOW, FLORIDA.
LEGGING.
Application filed April 24,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM It. OLAX- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartow, in the county of Polk and State of Florida,'have invented new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leggings, the object of the invention being to provide an improved legging which is made of sheet metal so as to be impervious to water and hence serves to protect the trousers of the wearer from becoming soaked when walking in wet grass or swampy places; which is proof against the bites of rattle snakes and the like; which can be readily put on and taken off and which can be very readily secured.
The invention consists in the construction, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying a perspective view of a in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan of the legging when in straightened out or flattened condi tion.
drawing Figure 1 is legging constructed In accordance with my invention the legging 1 is made from a plate of suitable sheet metal, preferably aluminum, which is extremely light and yet strong and durable and not liable to corrode. The plate is incurved at its center at the upper and lower edges as 2-3, and is rounded at the side edges as at ir-Sand is also rounded at the corners as at 67, the edges of the plate being doubled inwardly to form a reinforce 8 and provide a finish at the edge.
The plate is rolled to form a tubular body of oval form cross sectionally, to conform to the shape of the leg, which enables the legging to be readily fitted to the leg with the rounded end edges 45 overlapping and coacting with the rounded corners in providing the legging with a substantially V- shaped opening above said overlapping portions, said overlapping portions lying enabling the legging to be contracted and expanded diametrically as required.
The plate is providedupon one side, at points near the overlapping edges with U-, shaped loops 9 each of which is made of a Specification of Letters Patent.

A cord 12 for tying the legging is also provided, which passes through and connects the loops and by means of which the legging may be secured when adjusted.
To prevent the lower edge of the leggings from wearing the shoe I provide a bearing tab 14 which is made of leather or other suitable fleXible material, and is secured by means of rivets or the like at a point near the lower edge of the plate, the width of the bearing tab being such that the lower edge of said tab projects below that of the metallic body of the legging and in advance of the lowermost V-shaped opening to bear directly on the portion of the shoe overlying the arch of the foot and to keep the metal body of-the legging from contacting with the shoe top.
I would have it understood that any suitable kind of sheet metal may be used in the manufacture of my improved legging within the scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims and that modifications in the form, proportion and construction of the parts may also be made.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A legging comprising a flexiblemetal plate having rounded corners and rolled to form a body having overlapping end por-= tions, said end portions having outwardly curved marginal edges co-acting with said rounded corners in providing the body with substantially V- haped openings above and below said overlapping end portions, and a bearing strip for contact with a shoe extending beyond the lower edge of said body and in advance of the lowermost of said comprising a plate of resilaving rounded corners and rolled to form a body having overlapping end portions, said end portions having outwardly curved marginal edges coacting with said rounded corners in providing the body with substantiallyV-shaped openings above and below said overlapping end portions, a strip of flexible material extending circum- 2. A leggin ient material ferentially about the loWer edge of said In testimony whereof I afiix my signabody and projecting beyond the same in ture in presence of two Witnesses.
advance of the lowermost of said openings and a pair of lacing loops on said body WILLIAM R'CLAXTON' 5 having closed ends spaced therefrom and Witnesses:
