To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. ROBIN- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to stoves, and resides in the provision of an underfeed heating stove which will effect an efiicient burning of the products of combustion; in a novel construction of grating or bottom for a firepot; and in certain details of construction as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical, central section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 00-00 of Fig. 2; and Fig. i is a perspective view of the under side of thegrate.
A designates the fire-pot of the stove, B the ash pit suitably mounted upon a base C, and D is the drum extending upwardly above the fire-pot.
E is the fuel inlet formed by a forwardlyextending enlargement of the fire-pot, preferably integral therewith, and F is a door or closure for the outer end of the fuel inlet. Secured to the drum is a sectional cast ring G having the portion intermediate its ends dished inwardly, forming a chamber H intermediate the portion H of the stove wall and the ring. In the structure shown, the ring G has an upwardly extending annular flange I at its upper end attached to the drum as by rivets I, while the lower edge rests against the upper portion of the firepot preferably below the top edge of the fire-pot. an air inlet opening J controlled by a suitable damper as the slide damper K, the latter in the structure illustrated being arranged at the front of the stove above the fuel inlet. Preferably the upper wall L of the fuel inlet extends inwardly a slight distance, and at this point the lower edge of the ring G is cut away, as indicated by M. An opening or openings are provided for permitting the air to pass from the chamber H to the top of the fire pot, and I find it desirable to accomplish this by forming a plurality of apertures N adjacent the lower edge of the ring.

The amount of air entering the chamber II may be regulated by properly adjusting the slide damper, the burnt, gases passing up through the drum and discharging by way of the chimney fiue O. Preferably the door P of the ash pit is provided with a damper. Q so as to allow air to pass up through the grate R if desired. As the fuel fed to the fire-potthrough the inlet opening tends to shove the clinkers to the rear of the fire-pot,
I have provided a novel construction of grate which will allow the clinkers to be readily removed from the rear of the firepot. Thus as shown, the grating or bottom R of the fire-pot is provided with a. section S suitably mounted at the base of the fire-pot, and formed in its rear portion with an open: ing X, adapted to be closed by a section V preferably arranged below the plane of the.
section S and mountedin bearings W so as to be moved forwardly to the position shown in dotted lines. Attached to the section V is an actuating portion or handle W which extends to adjacent the door of the ash pit. Thus by moving the section V forwardly the clinkers will be allowed to drop through the space X into the ashpit.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of the invention, I do not desire my protection limited to the exact details of construction illustrated, but consider my invention of sufficient scope to embody various modifications.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In an underfeed stove, the combination with a fire-pot, of a laterally-extending fuel inlet on the lower portion of said fire-pot,
its lower wall inclining slightly upward and the outer edge thereof forming a fulcrum for a poker adapted to lift the live fuel within said fire-pot to permit the feeding in of green fuel on to the grate, an air chamber.
adjacent to the upper wall of said laterallyextending fuel inlet, having. inwardly-opening air discharge apertures, and control ings around the lower end thereof, and a laterally-extending fuel inlet on the lower portion of said fire-pot, its lower wall inclining slightly upward and the outer edge. thereof forming a fulcrum for a poker adapted tolift the live fuel within said firepot to permit the feeding of green fuel on to the grate below the air inlet.
3. In a stove, the combination with a firepot and a drum thereabove, of an annular member within the upper portion of said fire-pot forming an air chamber having an external inlet and a series of inward discharge openings around the lower edge 15 thereof, a laterally-extending fuel inlet con- ,ase
nection on the lower portion of said fire-pot beneath said air chamber, its lower wall indining slightly upward and the outer edge thereof forming a fulcrum for a poker adapted to lift the live fuel within the firepot to permit the feeding of green fuel thereunder, and a cover'for the outer end of said fuel inlet.
