JOINTED TOY FIGURE.
Application filed J anuary 19 1916. Serial No. 72,962. A
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, Emma J. READ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county. of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Jointed Toy Figure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v
The object of theinvention is to provide a new and improved jointed toy figure, representing a human being and arranged to permit of conveniently and uickly changing the positions of the movab e members of the figure to represent the figure in various artistic attitudes or poses such, for instance, .as assumed by a baseball player in action.
In order to accomplish the desired result,
use is made of a body, jointed arms pivotally connected with the said body, a neck mounted to turn in the topof the said body, a head mounted to rock forward. or backward on the said neck, and legs, of which one has its thi h integral with the said body and the other eg has its thigh mounted to swing forward and backward of the body,
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in.
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the jointed toy figure with parts shown in section and with the figure in erect position; Fig. 2'is a perspective view of the same with the parts in position such as is assumed by a baseball.
player trying to catch a ball; Fig; 3' is a perspective view of the body, neck, head and one of the legs; Fig. 4 is .an enlarged sectional front elevation of the upper part of the body, neck and head; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the 'body and thigh members with the movable thigh detached.
The jointed toy figure in its general colistruction consists of a body 10, a neck .11, a head 12, upper limbs 13 and lower limbs 14:. The body 10 is preferabl in theform. of a rectangular block of woo or other material and having its top rounded ofi in a sidewise direction and the sides somewhatconver g from the top to the hip. The neck'll 1s in the shape of a vertically disposed cylindrical pin having its lowerend mounted-to turn in a recess 15 formed in the top of the body 10at the middle thereof. The upper end 16 of the neck 11 is provided with, tapering sides 17 clampingly engaged by jaws 18 formed on the under side of the. head 12 by provldlng the said under side with a recess 19 elongated in a transverse direction. By
Patented can. 2, 1917.
the arrangement described the neck 11 is free I to turn 1n the body 10 and the head 12 is -11 it can be made to appear as if looking in a sidewise direction in addition to straight ahead, down or up. 4
Each of the upper limbs 13 consists of an upper arm 20 and a forearm 21 having an integral hand 22. The upper arm 20 has the inner s1de 23 of its upper end beveled and this side 23 abuts against the corresponding side of the body 10 so'that the limb 13 extends at an angle to the body 10. Pivot pins 24 are attached to the body 10 and project from the sides of the body 10 and engage recesses 25 formed in the sides 23 of the upper arm 20 to allow the same to'swing vforward or backward and at an angle to the sides of the body 10. The upper end 26 of each forearm 21 is made tapering and is clampingly engaged by jaws 27 formed on the lower end of the upper arm 20 by pro;
viding the latter with a transverse slot 28, as plainly indicated in the drawings. By the arrangement described the forearm21 is can be swung by the user in the p-laneof the upper arm so that the forearm 21 assumes a desired angular position to' the upper arm 20, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
The lower limbs 14 consist of thigh mem-- bers 30 and 31 and combined calf and foot.
.' members 32, 33. "The thigh member 30 forms an integral part of the body 10 while the thigh member 31-is mounted to swing on a pivot 34 held in and projecting s1dewise from the thigh member 30. The thigh members 30 and 31 diverge from the lower end of the body 10 and the inner side 37 of the upper end of'th thigh member 31 diverges and the uppel end 35 of the, thigh member 31'is rounded 'ofi in a transverse direction and fits in a socket/36 formed in thelowerend of t e body 10.. The mner side 37 of the upper end 35 of the thigh member 31 is beveled, and fits against the 90 clampingly engaged on the upper arm 20 and 1 cated in Fig.- 2.
- sents various artistic attitudes or pose inner beveled wall of the'socket 36 so that the thigh member 31 is free to swing forward and backward, at all times maintaining its diverging position relatively to the thigh member 30. The feet and 4:1 are integral with the calf members 32 and 33 and their under sides 42 and 43 are preferably beveled outwardly and upwardly to permit of supporting the figure on either foot and at the same time maintaining the equilibrium thereof at the time the various jointed parts are moved into difi'erent positions relatively to the same by swinging thecalf members rearwardly, as plainly indi- From theff by the arrangement described the several jointed parts can be moved into various positions by the user. so that the figure represuch, for instance, as assumed by a baseball player, football walking orexerc sing action.
It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described, the several movable parts can be readily disconnected tobe packed into a small package for convenient transortation or storage, and the 'nser can read- 11y reassemble the parts and adjust the same to the desired position.
Having thus described my invention, ll-
claim as new and desire to Patent:
