FOLDING 30x.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented an. 2, 1917.
Application filed September 20, 1915. Serial No. 51,616.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I," EDWARD E. PINKER- TON, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of- Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification. I v
My invention relates to improvements in foldable boxes and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is exceptionally stiff and durable in use, and is provided with de-- sirable surfaces for advertising purposes.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangementsof parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention shown with the cover raised, Fig. 2, an enlarged longitudinal section taken on the plane22 of Fig. 1, shown with the cover closed, Fig. 3, a transverse section of the box with the cover closed, Fig. 4, a plan view of one end of the box with the cover raised and the end partially unfolded, Fig. 5, a section throughone end of the box showing the parts in slightly different positions, Fig. 6, a plan View of the blank from which the box is formed, Fig. 7, an enlarged section taken on the plane 77 of Fig. 1, shown with the cover closed, Fig. 8, a perspective viewof a modified form of construction, shown with the cover raised, Fig. 9, a plan view of one end of the box illustrated in Fig. 8, shown with the cover raised and the end partially unfolded, Fig. 10, an enlarged transverse section of the box illustrated in Fig. 8, shown withthe cover closed, Fig. 11', an enlarged longitudinal .section of the box shown in Fig. 8, showniwith the cover closed, and Fig. 12, a plan View of the blank employed in forming the box illustrated in Fig. 8.
The form of construction illustrated in- Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, is made from a single blank cut and scored as indicated in Fig. 6'
to form a central bottom portion 13 having a side portion.14 at one edge and connected therewith by means of the usual scored or creased line. A cover portion 15 is similarlyarranged at the outer edge of side portion 14 and is provided with an edge flap 16 adapted to constitute one side of the cover portion. Cover portion 15 is also provided with side-flaps 17 and securing flaps 18 which are secured within the flap 16 to complete the cover, as indicated in Fig. 1, the side flaps 17 being rovided with diagonal scores or creases 19 or folding flat. A side portion 20 is arranged at the opposite sides of box portion 13 and is provided at its outer edge with reinforcing portion or flap 21, said parts being joined by scored or creased lines as indicated by the dotted lines. The
portion 21 is centrally split at 22 for substantially the full length ofthe box and. is
laterally slit at 23 to form internal flaps which are themselves divided by scoring into portions 2 1 and 25. A securing flap 26 is provided at the outer edge. portion 21 as indicated, said securing flap 26 being secured to the inner side of the side 14 and end flaps 27 are provided at the ends of portion 21 serving to hold the parts thereof together.
and constituting in part the ends of the box. Likewise end flaps 28 are provided at the ends of the bottom portion 13 and end flaps 29 and 30 are provided on the ends of side portions 14 and 20. Tongues are provided on the end flaps 28 and are divided by central scores or creases into portions 31 and 32.
In-completing the box for sale the flap 26 is secured to the inner side of side portion 14, as best shown inIFig. 3'and flaps 18 are secured to the inner side of flap 16, as best shown in Fig. 1 when the box is ready for sale, in which condition of the parts the portion 21 may be folded flat upon the portion 13 and adjoining parts and cover 15 also folded flat, as will be readily understood.
In arranging the box for use, the portion 21 is raised from contact with the portion 13 and flap portions 2425 folded as indicated in Fig. 3, to constitute hollow rectangular reinforcing side walls for the box. Then end flaps 27 29 and 30 are arranged across corresponding ends of the box and end flaps 28 folded up over the outer sides of the sameand the tongues 3132 folded downwardly between the side walls of the box against which they frictionally engage to .hold the parts securely locked in position.
isfactory. By this arrangement a very rigid, durable and attractive box is formed, and one which presents considerable thickness of the side and end walls and particu larly of the side walls so that attractive advertising or printed directions may be placed on the tops thereof.
The modified form of construction illus trated in Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive, is the same as that already shown and described except for a slight difference in the reinforcing portion 21. In this instance the portion 21 is not centrally split as before but the ends thereof are slit at 33 to form separated flaps 27, as shown in Fig. 12, otherwise the two constructions are identical. This box is arranged for sale in the same manner as the other one with the portion 21 resting fiat upon the portion 13. When it is desired to arrange the box for use the portion 21 is raised and the portions 24 depressed to form the inner sides of hollow side walls, the central portion 34 being connected therewith by means of scores or creases 35 to permit of the central portion 34 being arranged fiat upon the bottom of the box, as shown. Then the end flaps are arranged to form the ends of the box substantially as in the first described construction.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A folding box formed from a single blank having a central bottom portion; a-
side portion at one edge of said bottom portion; a cover portion at the outer edge of said side portion; a side portion at the opposite edge of said bottom portion; a portion at the outer edge of said last mentioned side portion foldable to form hollow sides inserted within said beforementioned sides; box end members on said bottom, cover and hollow side forming portions; and tongues on the bottom end members foldable into the box and frictionally engaging the sides thereof, substantially as described.
'2. A folding box formed from a single blank having a central bottom portion; a side portion at one edge of said bottom portion; a cover portion at the outer edge of said side portion; a side portion at the opposite edge of said bottom portion; a por tion at the outer edge of said last mentioned side portion foldable to form hollow sides inserted within said before-mentioned sides; box end members on said bottom, cover and hollow side forming portions; and tongues on the bottom end members foldable over said box end members into the box and frictionally engaging the sides thereof, substantially as described.
3. A folding box formed from a single blank having a central bottom portion; a side portion at one edge of said bottom portion; a cover portion at the outer edge of said side portion; a side portion at the opposite edge of said bottom portion; a portion at the outer edge of said last mentioned side portion foldableto constitute a false bottom and hollow side portions inserted in the box; and box end members on said bottom, cover and hollow side forming portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD E. PINKERTON.
