Description
J. A. WELSH. COMBINATION FLUSH AND LOCAL VENT FITTING. APPLICATION mm AUGJ, 1916.

JOSEPH A. WELSH, OF DUNKIRK, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION FLUSH AND LOCAL-VENT FITTING.
To all to hom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. WELSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Flush and Local-Vent Fittings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination flush and local vent for flush closets and urinals, the object being to provide a fitting in the form of a single unit, preferably formed of a casting having a pair of vertically disposed branches terminating in threaded nipples which can be readily connected to the flush tank and closet in such a manner that said fitting forms a conduit for the water entering the closet and a conduit for the offensive odors of the closet which escape therefrom.
Another object of my invention is to provide a fitting which is so connected to the tank and closet that when in position the rush of water will be moderate so as to eliminate to a great extent, the usual noise.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a combination flush and local vent fitting which can be quickly connected to the local vent pipe, closet and flush tank, so as to reduce to a minimum the joints so as to eliminate extra joints required to be made by the plumber whereby a considerable expense, time, and labor is saved.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my improved construction of combination flush and local vent fitting to a closet. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, the upper end portion being broken away. Fig.
' 3 is a vertical section through a slightly modified form showing the fitting provided with a vertically disposed partition to be used in connection with a battery of closets. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of still another modified form of fitting to be used in con nection with a battery of closets. 5 is a top plan view of the form shown in Fig.
4:, and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of still an- Specification of Letters Patent.

other modified form showing the fitting provided with an elbow branch.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying out my invention I employ a tubular pipe section 1 preferably formed of a casting having a closed bottom and provided with vertically disposed branches 2 and 3, which terminate in threaded nipples 4 and 5 carrying coupling collars 6 for con-' necting said branches 2 and 3 to the closet 7 and flush tank 8 through the medium of connecting pipes 9 and 10. -The upper end of the fitting 1 is connected to the local vent pipe 11 by a coupling 12, as clearly shown.
When the fitting is in the position as shown in Fig. 1, and the tank 8 is flushed,
the fitting forms a conduit for conveying to pass out through the fitting into the local vent pipe 11.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 a fitting 13 is provided having a centrally vertically disposed partition 14 forming chambers, each of which are provided with superposed branches 15 and 16 which can be connected respectively to closets and'fiush tanks where a battery of closets are used.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, I show a fitting 17 which is provided with a centrally disposed partition 18 and superposed elbow branches 19 and 20 connected to each chamber formed by the partition so as to allow the fitting to be con nected to batteries of closets arranged in a different manner to that disclosed in Fig. 3.
In the form shown in Fig. 6 a fitting 21 is provided having superposed elbow branches 22, only one of which is shown so that when the local vent is arranged to one side of the closet, the fitting can be readily installed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a combination flush and local vent fitting in the form of a pipe section having a closed end which can be readily formed of any suitable mate rial but is preferably formed with castings having superposed branches terminating in threaded nipples carrying a coupling collar for connecting the lower ends of the fitting with a closet and flush tank respectively, the upper end of the fitting being connected to the local vent in such a manner that the fitting when installed in connection with the closet and flush tank, provides means for conveying the fluid from the flush tank into the closet, and forms a vent for the closet after the fluid has passed out of the fitting into the closet so as to carry off the offensive odors from the closet into the local vent pipe.
I claim:
1. A combination flush and local vent, comprising a pipe section having a closed end and provided with laterally extending branch pipes connecting said pipe section respectively to a closet and flush tank, the open end of said pipe section having a con-v nection with a local vent.
2. The combination with a closet and flush tank therefor, of a pipe section having superposed branches connected respectively to said closet and flush tank, said pipe section having a connection with a local vent.
3. A closet fitting, comprising a pipe section having a closed bottom, said pipe section having superposed branches extending therefrom adjacent said bottom, means for connecting the upper branch to a flush tank, means for connecting the lower branch to a closet, and means for connecting the open end of said pipe section to a local vent.
4, A combination flush and local vent for flush closets, comprising a pipe section having a closed bottom, means for connecting the open end of said pipe section to a local vent, said pipe section being provided with superposed branches, means for connecting the upper branch to a flush tank, means for connecting the lower branch to a closet whereby said pipe section forms a conduit for the fluid from said flush tank to said closet, and a vent from said closet to said local vent pipe. 7
5. The combination with a local vent, ot a pipe section connected thereto having a closed bottom, branches extending laterally from said pipe section, a connection from the lower. branch to a elosetand a connection from the upper branch to a flush tank, whereby said pipe section serves as a conduit for conveying the fluid to said closet.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ai'lix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
