FRANK '.B. DAVIS, 0F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUST-CATGHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 2, 1917.
Application filed April 20, 1916. Serial No. 92,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Catchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dust catchers and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the invention relates to dust catchers for abrading devices, particularly such as are commonly used by dentists. In this use the dust is usually gold and the loss of this dust is considerable.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 a side elevation of the right side of the device. Fig. 3 a front elevation of the device. Fig. 41 an elevation of the left side of the device. Fig. 5 a front view of the device, the front plate being removed to show the. position assumed by the operator in using the device.
The dust catcher comprises a box formed of the back 1, front 2, bottom 3, top 4, right side 5, and left side 6. The sides 5 and 6 have openings 7 and 8 through them suitable for the introduction of the hands of the operator. These are shaped so that the openings leave a margin of the sides 5 and 6 which in connection with the hands of the operator makes a very nearly complete closure of the box.
I have shown in Fig. 5 the position assumed when used in dentistry. In this the wheel 9 is held in the right hand of the operator and as shown is operating on a plate 10 held by the left hand of the operator. It will be understood that in the use of these devices at least for quite a portion of the work, the operator grinds and tries so that the operation must be done at the operating chair. The abrasive wheel is small I so that it can be operated at the top without obscuring the vision.
In order that the operator may readily observe the operation the box is formed with a transparent top 11. This is ordinary glass Copies 01' this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Gommissioner of Patents;
which is slid into the top under the guides 12 and to more fully illuminate the work a portion at least of the front is provided with a transparent plate 13.
It is sometimes desirable to use a magnifying glass as the operation proceeds and for this purpose a magnifying glass 14: is provided. This is supported by the posts 15 which extend into the round pockets 16 at the rear corners of the box. If desired, one of the posts 15 may be screw threaded at 17 and a thumb nut 18 provided for accurately adjusting the microscope.
As before stated, the device is used ordinarily by an operator at the side of the patient. In order to readily support the dust catching box a hook 19 is provided by means of which it may be hooked into the vest or other clothing of the operator so that it is in convenient position at all times for use.
What I claim as new is 1. In a dust catcher, the combination of a box having an opening at each side thereof for the introduction of the hands of the operator with the operating tool at one side and the work at the opposite side; and a transparent closure for the top.
2. In a dust catcher, the combination of a box having an opening in the side thereof for the introduction of the hand of the operator with the work; a transparent closure for the top; and means for attaching the box to an operator.
3. In a dust catcher, the combination of a box having an opening at each side thereof for the introduction of the hands of the operator with the operating tool at one side and the work at the opposite side; and a transparent closure for the top and-front.
41. In a dust catcher, the combination of a box having an opening in each side thereof for the introduction of the hands of the operator with the work with the operating tool at one side and the work at the opposite side; a transparent closure. for the top; means for attaching the box to an operator and a magnifying glass above the transparent top and supported by the box.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
. FRANK B. DAVIS.
