FURNACE-DRAFT OPERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed April 18, 1916. Serial No. 91,971.
To all whom it 711 ay concern Be it known that I, WALTER HANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hasbrouck Hei hts, in the county of Bergen, State of New ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace- Draft Operators; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to furnace draft operators, and has particular reference to a device for electrically operating a draft opening mechanism at the will of the operator.
The primary object of my inventionconsists in the provision of a simplified device for releasing a furnace draft and operating medium at such a time, generally in the morning, when it is desired to place the furnaee under full draft without it being necessary for the householder to make a trip to the cellar or even to get out of bed.
In carrying out the above objects my invention contemplates the use of an electromagnetic trip for releasing a suspended weight which is suitably arranged in a gravity draft operating device of well known type.
A further object of the invention resides in the construction of the kind of mechanism above pointed out which may be conveniently installed at any suitable point in the house, and may be operated from any desired point, the complete trip mechanism occupying a very small space, and being operative by the use of a comparatively small amount of current.
With the above and other objects, in view, as will hereinafter appear my invention will now be set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view, substantially in actual size of the casing for my apparatus with the operative parts of the invention shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the operative parts, showing the mechanism tripped to release the draft operating medium. Fig. 3 is a diagram of the electrical circuit required to set the tripping device in operation.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, 1 represents a box or casing which forms a cover for the operative parts of my invention, although such cover is not neces sarily required. Inserted into the bottom of said box or casing 1 is a base block 2, upon which, preferably, the various elements of my invention are mounted. Said base is removably inserted in the box or casing 1, any suitable means being provided for holding it in position; I
Secured to one end of the base block 2 and preferably overhanging said end to a slight degree is a hinge 3. The free leaf of said hinge has secured thereto, as by rivets 4;, a plate 5 which normally rests horizontally upon the base block 2 and extends along the latter into the proximity of an electromagnet 6. Said electromagnet 6 is mounted upon a bracket 7, suitably secured to the base block 2. Said electromagnet 6 may be placed in a circuit by connecting the circuit wires to the binding posts 20 below the base block 2. Said bracket 7 extends over the magnet coil, and forms a support for the armature 8. Said armature 8 is pivotally suspended from the forward end 9 of the bracket 7 and overhangs the end of the core 10, said armature 8 having an enlarged plate 11 to which is secured the contact point 12 for engagement with the core 10. The lower free end 13 of the armature 8 normally overlies the extreme end of the plate 5 when the latter is extended upon the base block 2.
The upper portion of the armature 8 extends rearwardly from the bracket 7 and is enlarged at 14 into a counterweight, and at 15 is provided with a stop which bears upon the top of the bracket 7 so as to limit the distance which the end 13 of the armature 8 overlies the plate 5.
The hinged end of the plate 5 is provided with a hook 16, said hook being preferably formed from a cutaway portion of the plate 5 and has a comparatively slight amount of curvature, so that when the plate 5 is released by the armature 8, the weight 17 suspended upon the hook 16 will be readily released. The weight 17 is the gravital element of any well known gravity operated draft opening apparatus, and need not be given any further consideration in this case.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the installation of my improved device is a comparatively simple operation. The casing 1 is installed in any suitable locality where the weight 17 may be suspended from the hook 16. The push button 18 is located at any other desired point, generally in a bed room, probably adjacent the bed and the batteries 19 for furnishing the current to the circuit may be otherwise suitably located, probably at a point in proximity to the casing 1 with its contents.
In the operation of the device, the push button 18 is actuated, thus passing current from the batteries 19 over the wire a through the push button 18, over wire 2) to the coil 6 and thence over the wire 0 back to the battery 19. When the coil 6 is energized, the armature 8 is attracted thereto, thereby releasing the plate 5 so that the weight 17 may drop to operate the draft opening device. As soon as the weight 17 has dropped the plate 5 is free to fall back again upon the base block 2, and the push button 18 having been released, so that the circuit and the coil 6 are again deenergized, the armature 8 will move into its normal position overhanging the end of the plate 5, the armature falling into its normal position under the action of the counterweight 14. In this condition, the apparatus is set so that the weight 17 can be replaced upon the hook 116 in order to place the draft operating mechanism in position to be again released by the operation of the push button 18.
What is claimed is A furnace draft operating mechanism including a base block, a trip plate hinged at one end of said base block and being weighted to normally fall against said base block, an electromagnet mounted upon said base block, a counterweighted armature for said electroniagnet normally locking said trip plate in folded position, and a hook extending rearwardly from said lock plate and in the normal position of said trip plate providing a support for a draft mechanism operating weight.
Intestimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
