Description
C. L. DEPOLLIER.
POCKET KNIFE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-2 $915- LQIOJWO, Patented Jan. 2,1917.
WITNESS IHVEAI'TOR v UNETED STA i CHARLES L. DEPOLLIER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POCKET-KNIFE.
Application filed August 2, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. DEPOLLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, of the city of New York, in the county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
Small pocket knives or pen knives are sometimes carried on watch chains and for that purpose are provided with loops or bails or eyes for attachment to the chains. As heretofore constructed, however, such loops or bails or eyes have projected always beyond the body of the knife, causing inconvenience in handling the knives when removed from the chains and being unsightly when the knives are used as ordinary pocket knives.
It is the object of this invention to provide for such knives loops or bails for the convenient attachment of chains, etc., which loops or bails can be readily extended for connection with the chains but when not required for such purpose can be closed in and made to be practically invisible.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which Figure 1 is a side View of a. heavy pocket lmife, with the end of the knife in section to illustrate features of construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the same as seen from a position at right angles, the bail being shown in full lines in its closed position and in dotted lines in its extended position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the knife shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring first to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and S, the knife is of ordinary construction, except as hereinafter indicated, comprising a skeleton a, blades Z) pivoted in the skeleton at one end thereof and knife-sides c of any suitable material, with metallic end pieces cl firmly secured to the skeleton. Between the ends of the skeleton, opposite that at which the blades are pivoted, is secured to the skeleton a block e which is recessed in its end as at re to receive a swiveled head f, which may fiopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.

be secured in the block by a headed stud f. This head is formed with a recess, indicated at 7, which is adapted to form a seat for and to receive a bail or loop 9 which is pivoted in the head f, as at g. The bail is also provided with a lip for convenience in engagement by the finger nail.
WVhen the knife is to be carried on a lanyard or chain the bail g is extended or turned outward as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 but when the knife is to be carried in the pocket in the ordinary manner the bail is turned in to the recess f flush with or within the surface of the knife, and conforming to the recess, so that it not only does not project from the knife but is practically invisible.
It will be noted that the bail can be extended or turned outward or turned in no matter what the angular relation between the head and the block, the bail having no operative connection or relation to the block.
It will be understood that the bail is pivoted upon some part of the handle of the knife and. is independent of the knife-blade, for if it were connected to the knife-blade, for the purpose of affording a convenient means for opening and closing the blade, it could not be used for the purpose of connecting the knife to a chain or cord, to be carried thereby.
Various other embodiments of the invention will readily suggest themselves in view of the foregoing disclosure, the invention not being limited the precise details of construction shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention A pocket knife having in one end of the handle a block with a circular recess, a head swiveled to the block in said recess and freely rotatable therein with respect to the block and knife and also provided with a recess, and a bail pivoted to said head in said recess and adapted to be seated and received therein within the surface of the knife or to be extended for engagement with securing means.
This specification signed this 30th day of July A. D., 1915.
