will effectually prevent sticking of the drawer.
It is one aim of the invention to so construct the guide that the same will be adapted, in the full open position of the drawe to support the drawer bodily in advance 0 the desk or other article of furniture in which it is mounted, so that access may be had to all portions of the said drawer.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the slide that the drawer may be bodily removed or dismounted whenever so desired and without the necessity of removing any screws or other fastening devices or employing any tools. 1
Another aim of the invention is to provide a novel detent device for automatically connecting the drawer supporting rail and the connecting rail of the device for movement in unison when the drawer has been withdrawn a predetermined distance.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the guide embodying the present invention applied. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveyiew, partly in section illustrating the slide. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the slide, the supporting rail being drawn forwardly to the fullest extent. Fig. 4 is adetail transverse sectional view on the line 4.4: of Fig. 3. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The slide embodying the present invention includes a guide rail lformed with a channel 2 which extends longitudinally thereof,
and the walls of which are undercut, as indicatedat 3. This guide rail is provided at its ends with triangular attachingplates 4 having openings 5 through which maybe passed screws or other securing elements which are to be driven into the 'front and rear walls of the drawer compartment so as to secure the rail in place in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The rail 1 is further provided between its ends with an attaching plate 6 which may be integral therewith or secured thereto in any sultable manner and this plate is provided above and below the rail 1 with openings for the'passag'e of screws for securing the plateto the inner side of the panel of the drawe compartment.
The device embodying the present invention further includes a supporting rail which is carried by the drawer and a connecting rail wh ch slidably connects the guide and supporting'ralls and which is indicated by the numeral 7. Thisrail includes a connect-' ing portion 8 formed at one longitudinal edge with a. flange 9 occupying a plane at right angles to the plane of the connecting portion 8 of the said rail and extending above and below the said portion. This flange extends from one end of the rail to a point intermediate the ends thereof, and from the point of termination of the inner end of the flange the connecting portion 8 is cut away or reduced in width, as indicated at 10. The rail 7 is formed along its other longitudinal edge and throughout its entire length with a flange 11 which is parallel to the flange 9 and, as inthe case of the said flange 9, extends above and below the said connecting portion 8 of the said connecting rail. By reference to the drawings it will be observed that the'flange 9 of the connecting rail slidably fits within the unde licl]lt walls of the channel 2 in the guide ra1 The drawer supporting rail is indicated by the numeral 12 and is formed with a longitudinally extending channel 13 having its walls undercut, as indicated at 14, the undercut walls of the channel slidably 'fitting the flange 11 of the connecting rail. As stated before, the connecting portion 8 of the connecting rail is cut away, as indicated at 10, and it is narrowed to such an extent that its outwardly presented edge will be flush with the outwardly presented side of the supporting rail 12. The rail 12 is mounted in a groove 15 formed in the side Wall 16 of the drawer to be supported and is secured in place in any suitable manner, although preferably, by means of an attaching plate 17 located at its rear vend.
Inasmuch as the outer edge of the forward portion of the connecting rail is flush with the outwardly presented face or side of the rail 12, the drawer may closely fit within the opening of the drawer compartment,
In order that the connecting slide 7' may be connected for movement with the drawer supporting slide 12, a detent 18 is pivoted as at 19 in the under side of the rail 12 and the pivot for the detent is so locatedthat the detent will be overbalanced by its portion 20 which is located at one side of the pivot so that its engaging end 21, which is located at the other side of its pivot, will have a tendency to move upwardly and in engagement in a notch 23 formed in the lower edge of the flange 11 of the connect-'- ing rail at a suitable point. One wall of the channel in the rail 12 is recessed adjacent the pivot 19, as indicated at 24, and the detent is provided with a pin 25 which projects laterally into the recess and, in the inactive position of the detent, seats in a notch 26 formed in the wall of the recess drawer, the drawer will be located bodily beyond the drawer compartment and firmly supported in this position. Of course, upon closing movementof the drawer, the rail 12wil1 slide rearw'ardly upon the rail 7 until the forward end of the rail 7 strikes the front 27 of thesaid; drawer, whereupon the rail 7 will be carried rearwardly with the rail 12. Should it be desired to bodily remove or dismount the drawer, the sameis slid tofull open position and the detent curely held within the groove provided forits reception in the side walls of the drawer to be supported, the said member is formed with upper and lower flanges 27 which engage in the undercut grooves in the walls of the main groove in the =-manner' clearly shown in the drawings.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: I
In a drawer slide, a guide rail, a supporting rail, a rail connecting the firstmentioned rails and having portions slidably engaging the said guide and supporting rails, the connecting rail being" formed at its forward end and in its under side with a notch, a pawl pivotally mounted withinthe supporting rail and having its end at one side of its pivot .arranged to engage within the said notch in the connecting rail upon sliding movement of the supporting rail in onedirection whereby to' connect the said rails for movement in unison, the said supporting rail being formed in its side with a recess located opposite the said end of the pawl and being provided in the bottom wall of its recess with a notch, and a .pin projecting laterally from the said end of JOHNR.
