1 My y @y MOSES M. MARCUSE, or NEW YORK, N. Y., AssreNoE T0 WEST nrsmEEcTINs COMPANY, OFNEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION on NEW YoE OOMMODE.
intense.
To an whom it may concern Be it known that I, MosEs M. MAnoUsE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented, a new anduseful Improvement inlCommodes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in commodes, with the object in View of providing a novel and sanitary device for retaining the feces, etc, for a considerable length of time withoutobjectionable odor and concealing from view the vessel con taming the foreign matter, under certain conditions.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a detail side elevation, the casing partly broken away to show parts within, Fig. 2 represents a detail vertical section taken in the plane of the line J b-A of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a detail horizontal section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 1.
i The casing is denoted by 1, the top by 2, which top is secured to the flanges 3 on the casing by any well known means. The top is provided with a tubular body 5 depending therefrom and having oppositely inclined bottom edges. A receiving vessel 6 is located beneath the tubular body 5. A divided seat comprises a back member 7 and a front member 8, the back member of which is fixed to the top 2 and the front member hinged at 9 to the back member. The front member is provided with a hole 10 forming a seat, as shown in dotted lines Figs. 1 and 2, which hole is arranged to register with the tubular body 5. A cover 11 hinged at 12 to the back member 17 of the divided seat, is located so as to rest on the front member and cover the hole 10. A gasket 13 is fixed to the cover so as to form a seal between the cover 11 and seat 8 when closed. I
A pair of flaps 14, 15, fixed to rock shafts 16, 17, mounted in hangers 18, 19, 20, 21, depending from the top, are arranged to close the bottom of the tubular body 5. These flaps are located so that the abutting edges will meet directly across the center of the tubular body 5 thereby forming a bottom for the tubular body. By reason of the walls of the tubular body being made will be excluded from thereceivin Specification of Letters Patent. te t 2 1e 6,, Application filed August 20, 1913. Serial No. 785,721. i
longer at points diametrically opposite the flaps when closed against the bottom edges, will form an obtuse angle. To open the flaps l4, 15, I provide plungers 22, '23, arranged to engage arms 2 1, 25, fixed to the rock shafts 16, 17, which plungers project upwardly through thetop'of the casing and are adapted to engagethe front member 8 of the seat so that when weight is applied to'the'seat the plungerswillbe forced down wardlythereby rocking the shafts and opening the flaps.
Itis to be understood that the weight of the front member 8 alone is not sufficient to open the flaps but with the cover resting on the front member the plungers will be forced down to the limit of theirmovement, where the front member of the seat will rest upon the top.
The flaps are closed by springs 26 or weights 27, 28, or both. These springs 26 are mounted on the shafts 16, 17, at the sides of the flaps, rock the shafts, close the flaps and lift the plungers and thereby the front member of the seat.
If desired to assist in a complete closure of the flaps against the tubular body 5, I may aflix the weights27 and 28 to the outer ends of the flaps which assist the springs in lifting the plungers and the flaps to their closed position.
The position of the plungers with respect to the front seat member is such that it will require the combined weight of both the front member and the cover to force the plungers down and the flaps to their open position. I
When the commode is to be used, the cover is lifted from the seat, which takes the additional weight off the seat and the flaps by their springs and weights immediately close upon the tubular member, and conceal from view the contents of the receiving vessel.
Upon the seating of the person using the commode, the flaps will immediately open and again close when the weight is removed from the front member of the seat.
It will be seen that flies and other insects vessel by the flaps when the cover 13 opened and by the cover when the cover is closed.
To carry off the odors accumulating withm the casing 1, I provide a flue 29 located in the back member of the seat 7. A series of holes 30 are arranged near the bottom and in the sides of the casing 1, which holes tend to create a current of air to pass-upwardly through the casing to the flue, thereby carrying ofi? all odors Within.
While I have described my invention in, connection With a commode, it is obvious that I Wish to cover the same Wherever it can be advantageously used.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not, Wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
WVhat I claim ,is:
1. A commode comprising a casing, a tubular'body having oppositely inclined bottom edges, a seat, a cover for said seat, a pair of coacting flaps having weights a'fiixed to their outer ends to normally close them copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents uponsaid inclined bottom edges, and means for opening said flaps.
2. A commode comprising a casing, a top therefor, a tubular body depending from saidv top, said body having oppositely inclined bottom edges, a seat, a cover for said seat, .a pairof coacting flaps having Weights aflixed to their outer ends to normally close them upon said tubular body and plungers connected to said flaps and arranged to slide insaid top for opening saidxfiaps.
In, testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, '1 have signed my name in presence of two Witnesses, th-is 7th day of August, 1913.
