To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, HALvoR H. Lronlg, a
citizen of the United States,- residing 'at,
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Wringers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. My invention relates generally to laundry apparatus, and has reference more particularly to the class of power driven clothes wringers.
One of the main'objects of the invention is to improve the construction and increase the eficiency and utility of devices of this character. Another object is the provision in a clothes wringer of a novel carrier de-- vice-permittin slidable movement ofthe wringerwhere y to assume more than, one operative position with reference to its support, and wherein the rolls of the wringer 5 are readily dissociated from the drivmg mechanism in case of accident occurring to the operator. I These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to myinvention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in theaccompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a wringer, embodying my invention, the normal and extended positions of the wringer being respectively indicated by the full and dotted lines; and Figure 2 is atransverse section of the wringer taken along the line 2-2 of Figure-l.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 3 designates the frame of a power driven wringer and 4 a fragmentary portion of a suite 1e support therefor, such as for example a laundry tub or washing machine body. Upper and lower rolls 5, 6, are mounted in the standards -7. of the wringer frame 3, and are operatively connected by the gears 8 and 9 inthe customary man ner, the gears being respectively mounted on the upper and lower roll shafts 10 and 11. My invention more particularly resides in the provision of a two part carrier device or frame through the instrumentality of which the wrmger is capable of being slidably 17 (Figure 1).

carrier supporting frame member 12 having a a substantially flat central portion 13 and vertical side walls 14 constructed to form the marginal channels 15, said member being mounted on the support 4 and preferably having end walls 16, 17 and the oppositely disposed horizontal extensions 16 and The numeral shaft journaled in bearings 19 and 20 and carrying thereon the loose bevel pinions 21 and clutch 22, such shaft having secured thereon a gear 23 whose upper toothed portion 23 extends slightly through an opening 24 centrally formed in the'portion 13 of the member 12.. Meshing with the loose bevel pinions 21, and designed to impart opposite rotation to the shaft 18 through manipulation of the clutch 22 with reference to said pinions, is abevel gear 25 which is mounted on the end of a vertical drive shaft 26 carried in suitable bearings 26. Longitudinal depressions 41, leading from the extension 17 to stops 27 disposed adjacent the opening 24, are formed in the upper face of the frame member 12 and marginally of its central portion 13 to constitute lower ball race sections for the anti-friction balls 28 normally located in the extension 17, the other extension 16 of the frame member bein similarly. provided with recesses 29 where y to seat another set of anti-friction balls 28. i
The upper part of the carrier device consists of a slidable carrier frame member 30 substantially co-extensive with the support frame member 12, said member carrying the wiinger frame 3 and provided with the ear housings 31 and 32 in which the roll sha t 11 has bearings at 31- and 3 2, the shaft extending to the left through the housing 31 and provided with a handle 11.
Secured on the shaft 11, at opposite ends 18 indicates a horizontal thereof, are driven gears 33 and 34: respecextended position as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1. Extensions 31 and 32 are provided to correspond with the extensions 16 and 17= and normally rest upon the anti-friction elements to which reference has already been made.
As will be seen by an inspection of Figure 2, the carrier frame 30 is marginally formed at,its sides with inclined face portions- 37 constituting the upper ball race sectionsfor the anti-friction elements and provided also .with depending portions 38 bent down'into the channels 15, the walls 14 'of the member 12 having upwardly and inwardly inclined portions 14 extending over the inclined face portions 37 "of the member 12. In this way vertical and lateral displacement; and in this connection it. is considered preferable to additionally provide guard'members 39 depending from each of the housings, 31 and 32, to engage the outer faces of the vertical 'Walls 14, and in a manner tending to main-- tain the verticality of the wringer during the operation of wringing out the clothes. The extension 32 is formed with spacers 40 for the balls 28, the inner one of which is adapted to abut the stop 27 when the frame 30 is extended and the outer one-normally takes against the end flange 17 of the extion" of movement being governed, as is custension 17, (Figure 1). 'Theoperative relation of the gears 23 and 33 may be readily dissociated by grasping the handle 11 and moving the upper carrier frame 30 the required distance. In a device of the character described, the combination of a wringer provided with rolls and a base, a supportfor said base, said wringer adapted for movement relative to said support in a substantially horizontal plane from one operative position to another, a driving element, and driven gearing for said rolls adapted to be actuated by said.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a wringer comprising a frame and its rolls, gears connecting said rolls and having a shaft extension, a carrier member for said wringer in which said shaft extension is mounted, and provided with a base, a supporting member in which the base of the carrier member is slidably mounted,
I whereby the wringer is adapted to -have movement from its normal operative position to an extended position with reference to said supporting member, driven gearing for said gears extending through said base and operatively carried by said shaft extension, and means by which said gearing may be driven in' either position of the wringer.
7 In a device of the character described, the combination of a support having a power shaft, a wringer comprlsing a frame and its geared rolls, a carrier member for said wrlnger, a supporting member secured to said support and in which the carrier member is slidably mounted, whereby the wringer is adapted to have, movement from one operative position to another with reference to said support, driven gearing for said rolls carried by said carrier member, and means driven by said shaft whereby said gearing may be actuated in both positions of the wringer.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a driving element, a wringer provided with rolls and a base, a support for said driving element and in which said base is slidably received, whereby the wringer is adapted to have movement relative to said support from one operative position to another, anti-friction elements disposed intermediate said base and said support, and driven gearing for said rolls adapted for actuation by said driving element when the wringer is moved to either operative position, said driven gearing movable with the wringer and disconnectible from the driving element in the movement of said wringer.
