C. T. WOOTTEN.
HANDLE CONNECTION.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 21. 1915.

HANDLE CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, 1916.
Application filed October 21, 1915. Serial No. 57,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. WOOTTEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haddon Heights, Camden county, State of New Jersey, have invented certainvnew and useful Improvements in Handle Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the means for connecting a handle to a receptacle, such as a metallic can, and it has for its object to provide means whereby a staple-like connecting device for securing a handle to a receptacle may be more economically and securely fastened than has heretofore been the case.
A further object of my invention is to eliminate and avoid the use of soldering material for securing the staple-like connecting device to the receptacle which is objectionable for the reason that it is relatively expensive to apply and for the further reason that it does not connect the staple-like connecting device with the body of the receptacle with that security which is desirable. My invention also has for its object to provide a construction of device for connecting handles to receptacles which device is adapted to be securely fastened to receptacles of material other than metal. 7
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be referred to in the detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood reference should be had to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated one form of a convenient embodiment of device embodying my inven tion but it will be understood that changes in the details of construction thereof may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from my said invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top part of a receptacle having a handle secured to said receptacle by a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a section or portion of a wall having a handle secured thereto by said device; Fig. 3 is a view from the inside of a receptacleshowing the body portion of the connecting device in dotted lines and also showing the inner folded ends of prongs by means of which the said device is securely fastened and held in place; Fig.
4: is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the connecting device separate from the receptacle and the handle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a receptacle and 2 a handle or hand'member pivotally secured thereto by means of a staple-like connecting device. The said device, in the construction shown, is constructed of sheet metal and includes a portion 3 substantially of U-shape the edges of which'are provided with or terminate in flanges 4 extending laterally substantially at right angles to the sides of the portion 3. These flanges are provided at their side edges with one or more projections 5. Projections 6 are also provided at the opposite ends of the flanges 4, such projections in the construction shown being slightly wider than the width of the flanges, the material from the outer edges of said projections 6 tapering or inclining inwardly to the side edges of the flanges as shown at 7. The projections 5 and 6 occupy planes substantially at right angles to each other.
In the construction of the connection it is first shaped. as indicated in Fig. 5, the outer edges of the projections being slightly bent inwardly so as to facilitate the bending of the same into the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These projections 5 and -6 are then inserted through slots 10 formed in the wall of the receptacle and are then bent first outwardly and flat against the inside wall of the receptacle adjacent to a slot 10 as indicated at 11 and then inwardly, as indicated at 12, a portion of the material at 12 overlying that of the material at 11. The portion of material 12 extends beyond the slot 10. The extreme outer ends of the projections are then bent downwardly toward the inside surface of the adjacent portion of the wall and are then extended reversely underneath the portions 12 as shown at 13, terminating adjacent to or in contact with the inside surfaces of the portions of the projections at the points where they emerge from the slots 10 in the walls of the receptacle. By thus bending and folding the ends of the projections which extend through the walls of the receptacle they are materially strengthened and are capable of exerting relatively great resistance against being pulled out through the slots 10 when the receptacle is lifted, with a load therein, by
means of the handles 2. The said projec- W tions as thus bent and terminated inside of the receptacle are of T-shape as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Although I have illustrated each of the side edges of' the flanges 4 as being provided with two projections I desire it to be understood that my invention comprehends a construction in which only the endprojections 6 are provided and also that it comprehends a construction when such end projections 6 are omitted and only the side projections 5 are included.
By my invention I have provided a means whereby handles may be connected with and securely fastened to receptacles capable of sustaining loads of heavy material which may be placed within the receptacles when lifting the same by means of the handles secured to receptacles by said connecting devices. v
In the construction shown I have illustrated the connecting device as of considerable length. It will be understood, however, that the length of the said device may be varied without departing from the spirit or scope of. my invention.
It will be understood that a connecting device embodying my invention is adapted for use upon receptacles either rectangular, circular Or of any other shape.
I claim:-
1. A device for fastening handles to receptacles comprising a U-shaped member the sides of which terminate in laterally extending flanges said flanges beingprovided with projections which extend through openings formed in the walls of the receptacles, the said projections terminating in T-shaped heads against or in proximity to the inside surface of the said walls.
2. A device for fastening handles to receptacles comprising a member having a U-shaped portion the sides of which terminate in laterally extending flanges which flanges are provided with projections at their side edges and which are also provided with projections at their opposite ends said projections being adapted to extend through openings formed in the walls of receptacles and terminate with retaining means inside of the said receptacle.
Copies 0: this patent may be obtained for @LA device for fastening handles to receptacles comprising a member having a U-shaped portion with flanges extending laterally from the opposite sides thereof said flanges having projections extending from their side edges and also having projections extending from their ends the said last-mentioned projections occupying planes substantially at right angles with respect to the planes of the first-named projections and the said projections having T-heads for securing the same to the walls of said receptacles. v
4. A device for fastening a handle to a receptacle,'said device having a portion of substantially U-shape and having flanges extending laterally fromthe edges of the sides of said U-shaped portions said flanges being providedwith flexible projections which extend substantially at right angles to said projections, said flanges 'being adapted to extend through openings in the walls of said receptacle and being provided respectivelywith means upon the inside of said receptacle which means'operate to securely 1 connect the said device to the said receptacle.
5. A device for connecting a. handle to a receptacle consisting of a sheet metal member comprising a U-shaped portion having flanges extending laterally from the edges 7 jections each extending outwardly from. the 1 slot through which it is extended and then inwardly so as to overlie the said outwardly extending portion and the said slot and the extreme end of each of said projections be ing then extended downwardly and reversely underneaththe inwardly extended portion whereby T-heads areformed upon the said projections to retain the said devicein engagement with the said receptacle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention. I have hereunto signed my name this, 19th day of October, A. D. 1915.
