Be it known thatI, WILLIAM F. JoHNsoN, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Basin, in the county of Bighorn and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Copy-Holder Attachments for Type-Writers, o'it'whieh' the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a copy holder, and more particularly to the class of auto matic copy holder attachments for typewriters. s i
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a copy holder attachment of 'thischaracter wherein the same issupported upon and travels with the carriage of the typewriter, and is automatically spaced by the platenof the latter for the word to word and line to line copying ofthe work when the typewriter is operated; thereby assuring accuracy in the reading of the work and the copying thereof. Another object of the invention is the pro- 3 vision of anattach ment of this character wherein the line spacing can be varied according to the spacing-of thepaper upon the platen of a typewriter, Fthereby assuring the proper feedof the writing to be copied, and
. avoiding the loss of the place in the copy while the typewriter is heing'operated.
A still fu'rth'erobject of the invention is the provision of a copy holder attachment of this character wherein the writing to be copied is automatically fedj therein correspondingly to the fe'edingofthe sheets in the typewriter on actuating the keysthereof so that the writing to be copied can be read in a *quick and convenient manner, and the loss of the place in the copy is entirely "eliminated, the attachment being of novel form to assure the perfect working thereof. A still further object or the invention is the provision of a copy holder attachment of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily applied to various styles of typewriters, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture With these and otherobjects in view, the invention consistsin the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will behereinafter fully described,illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates the body of a typewriter, B the keys for actuating the type mechanism, G the movable carriage, and D the rotary platen ,journaled therein, which are of the ordinary well-known construction, whilesupported by the carriage is the automatic copy holder attachment hereinafter fully described.
The copy holder attachment comprises the upwardly convergent supports 10 which are arranged in pairs and are secured to opposite ends of the carriage G in'any suitable manner, and have vertical uprights 11,- and at the point 01? intersection of the respective supports 10 "otthe pairs is journaled the shaft 12 of a feed roller 13 which is located between the said pairs of supports, and about which is adapted to be trained the sheet containing the writing to be copied while the typewriter is being actuated. 0n oneend of the shaft 12 carrying the roller 13 is a hand knob 14 which permits the manual turning of the roller when desired.
At one end of the platen D and movable therewith is a ratchet spacing wheel 15 as usual for the spacing of the said platen while the :keys B and the spacer bar of the type mechanism are actuated in the ordinary wellknown manner. Swingingly mounted upon the support 10 is a trip arm 16, which is supported by the pivot '17 passed therethrough and engaged in the said support, andupon this arm 16 is carried a ratchet member 18 which is adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 15, and this-member 18 is adjustably locked in any suitable manner relative to the ratchet wheel 15 in a slot 18 in the arm 16, preferably by means of a binding nut 18, the said arm 16 beingformed with an elongated slot 19 in which is adjustably engaged the pivot 20 of a ratchet arm or dog 21, the same being formed with ratchet teeth 22 at its free end for tripping engagement with. ratchet teeth 23 of a ratchet spacing wheel 2% which is fixed to the shaft 12 supporting the feed roller 13 so that on the spacing of the platen D the feed roller 13 will besimultaneously spaced therewith for the automatic feeding of the sheet having the writing to be copied on actuating the typewriter. It will be apparent that the arm 16 swings in an arc and during the upward movement of the said arm by one of the teethon the ratchet wheel 15 engaging with the member 18, the latter trips over the tooth engaged therewith when the arm reaches a predetermined elevation so that the spring 37 becomes active for the lowering of the arm 16 and the bringing of the member 18 in position with another tooth on the wheel 15. In other words, when the arm 16 moves upwardly the member 18, following the arcuate movement of the said arm, rides 01f of the tooth engaged therewith of the wheel. 15 and is permitted to drop into engagement with another tooth of the wheel 15. This is due to the pivotal mounting of the arm 16 relative to the axis of rotation of the wheel 15, as will be apparent. By adjustment of the pivot 20 in the slot 19 in the arm 16 the spacing of the feed roller 13 can be varied accordingly with the spacing of the platen of the typewriter, thereby permitting accuracy in the line to line writing from the copy automatically fed by the roller 13 of the holder attachment;
Fixed to the uprights 11 and bridging the feed roller 13 is a bar 25 on which are adjustably mounted the paper guides 26 in the free end of which is journaled the shaft 27 supporting the friction rollers 28 which serve to smooth the paper on the feed roller 13, and guide the same when trained about the said feed roller.
Arranged below the feed roller 13 is a guide roller 29, the shaft 30 of which is ournaled in arcuate shaped springs 31 which serve as hangers therefor, and are fixed to the top bar 25, and this roller 29 serves to guide the paper onto the feed roller 13 from a paper rest 32 which is fixed to the supports 10 rearwardly oi the said feed roller 13, and engaged with the ends of the shaft 30 are releasing levers 33, the same having pivotally connected thereto toggle links 34 and 35, respectively, the links 3 1 being pivoted to the bar 25, while the links 35 are connected with the shaft 27 supporting the friction rollers 28, and by operating the levers 33 forwardly the said rollers 23 and 29 will be automatically moved away from the roller 13 for the freeing of the paper containing thewriting to be copied so that the said paper can be readily removed from about the feed roller as the occasion may require.
Fixed to one of the supports 11 and engageable with the ratchet wheel 23 is a resilient locking dogor pawl 36 which prevents the rotation of the feed roller 13 in one direction, yet the same is free to be rotated in a reverse direction.
Connected to the ratchet arm ordog 21 is a coiled retractile spring 37 j which is also connected with one of the supports 10, and this spring serves to positively hold the ratchet teeth 22 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 23 on th spacing wheel 24 for the positive spacing thereof when the platen D is spaced on the operation'ot the typewriter so that the sheetcontaining the writing to be copied will be automatically spaced correspondingly to the spacing of the sheet being written upon in th typewriter when the latter is actuated.
Arranged forwardly of the carriage C and platen -D thereon, and fixed to the body A of the typewriter, is a stationary gage frame 38 having a scale bar 39 upon which is slidably fitted a pointer 40 which is adapted to aline with the letters constituting the words of the writing tobe copied so that as the carriage is advanced the pointer will indicate the letter of the word in the writing to be copied, and thereby assuring the accurate reading of the writing, and obviating the possibility of the loss of the placewhen copying the same. The pointer 40 can be adjusted on the bar 39 to properly positionthe same for the starting point in the writing to be copied.
The typewriter is operated in the ordinary well-known manner, and also the paper is introduced and fed over the platen as usual. Now, on the movement of the carriage the copy holder is advanced therewith, and when the platen in the carriage is rotated similar movement is imparted to the feed roller in the copy holder, so that the sheet containing the writing to be copied is fed thereby simultaneouslyv with the spacing of the platen. a

The combinationwith theplaten carriage and platen of a "typewriter, of an automatic copy holder comprising supports fixed to the carriage, a feed roller journaled in the supports, a ratchet'spacing wheel connected with the feed roller, a trip arm swingingly mounted upon one of the supports, a ratchet member carried by said arm and adapted to be operated by the platen, said trip arm being formed with an elongated slot, an adj ustable pivot engaged in said slot, a ratchet dog carried by said pivot and having ratchet teeth for engagement with the ratchet Wheel, and resilient means connected with the sup port and the ratchet dog for holding the 10 latter in operative relation to the ratchet wheel.
