Patented n 19,1916.
Application filed November 3, 1914. Serial No. 870,137;
:To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLARD O. LATHROP,
a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a 'cert ain'new and useful Improvement in Spring-Bed Supporting-Hangers, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hanger-supports for spring bed-bottoms and its object is to provide in connection with the hanger-support and the spring-bed side-rail an arched clamp-plate that is longitudinally-mounted on the said side-rail and'has a pairor more of downwardly-turned corners that engage the said side-rail when it is placed in position to-cap or span the inner end of the longitudinally-slotted hanger base or bar and is itself provided with a hole through which a bolt passes upwardly from an alined hole in said side-rail and the slot in said base or bar, and a suitable thumbnut used to adjustably and detachably secure the plate and the hanger in the desired relation on said side-rail to suit varied widths of bedsteads.
The device is a very simple one and is fully described herein in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of the improved hanger device in connection with sectional fragments of the bed-spring side-rail and the angle-bar or side-rail of the bedstead; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section taken on the dotted-line a, w, of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the clamp device in use in connection with a straight, flat bar whose outer end rests on the lower inner shoulder or ledge of a wooden side-rail; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the preferred form of clamp-plate having a single pair of pendent or downwardly-turned corners at but one longitudinal side only.
1 indicates an angle-iron side-rail of a bedstead shown in Fig. l with its horizontal side turned inwardly toward the springbed side-rail 2 which parallels it and is also of a similar right-angle-iron form (as seen in both Figs. 1 and 3). The side-rail 1 is of somewhat heavier material than that of the side-rail 2, as customary, and my invention is adapted for use in connection with a wooden side-rail lthat has the usual shoulder'or ledge 3 along its inner vlower edge (as seen in Fig. 3 only).
When a right-angle bar orangle-iron is used for the bedsteadside-rail l (as seen in Figsil and.2), a common form of hanger composed of a vertical main-member 4, up per, horizontalhook-member 5' and .lower horizontal base-member or foot 6, is best adaptedfor engagement therewithand for supporting'the spring-bed structure therefrom. A longitudinal slot 7'is pierced in thebase or foot (iofthe hangerto provide for bedsteads of a straight, horizontal bar 6 is necessary, the samebeing slotted at 7 like unto the foot 6 of the angled hanger. I In order to couple the said hangers to the side-rail of the spring-bed for suspending or supporting the latter between the usual pair of siderails 1 of the bedstead, I provide a clamping-plate that is composed of a body portion 8 having downwardly-turned flanges 9, 9, at its opposite ends, bases or feet 10 projecting from said flanges, and downwardly-turned arms or stops 11 preferably at one end only of each of the bases or feet 10, along one longitudinal edge or side of the clampingplate (as seen in Fig. 4 only). The arms or stops 11 can, however, be provided at both ends of both of the bases or feet 10, which would locate them at each of the four corners of the rectangular clamping-plate (as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3), but it would not be essential to do so, as the two stops 11 seen in Fig. 4 will beample to keep the plate from turning or shifting on the siderail 2 when once set and secured in place.
Besides, the use of but the two stops 11,
seen in Fig. 4, renders the device more readily and cheaply made, and, also, more readily handled in manufacture, packing anduse.
A vertical bolt 12is used to attach each hanger to the side-rail 2 of the spring-bed. This bolt has its shank extended upwardly through a circular hole 13 in the horizontal upper member of the angle-iron forming said side-rail 2, thence through the slot 7 in the hanger base or foot 6 (or bar 6*, as the case may be), thence through a central hole 14 pierced in the body portion 8 of the clamping-plate to be finally capped or engaged by a nut (thumb one, as shown, preferred) 15 on its upper screw-threaded varied widths... l When a wooden bedstead slde-rall 1s used, however,
end. The lower end of the shank of the bolt is preferably square in cross-section to prevent its turning in the slot 7 when apply- T above the top face of the angle-iron or siderail 2 (as in Fig. 2) to secure a better frictional contact and clamping effect between the nut 15 and said top face of the side-rail 2, especially for the contiguous faces of the hanger base or bar 10 and the said top face of side-rail 2.
The arms 11 have sufficient depth to extend somewhat below the lower face of the upper horizontal member of the spring-bed side-rail 2 so as to form ample stops to hold or interlock the clamping-plate in the proper square or alined relation with the hanger foot or bar and theside-rail 2.
I claim a In combination, a spring-bed angle-iron Copies of this patent may be obtained for side-rail and a transverse supportinghanger device, the latter comprising a longitudishort downwardly-turned stop-arms formed at the opposite ends of the said horizontal flanges of the clamping-plate and adapted to freely span and engage said side-rail, a vertical bolt that is partly fiat-sided and adapted to engage a circular hole in the horizontal wing of the said side-rail, thence engaging the slot in said hanger-bar against turning and thence engaging the said central orifice of the clamping-plate, and a clamping-nut on the outer threaded-end of the bolt.
