L. W. THOMAS. BUCKLE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.28, 1916.

Mm) H pll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS W. THOMAS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OSCAR T. WRIGHT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS W. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in buckles and has particular application to a buckle stamped from a single piece of metal.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a buckle which may be stamped from a single sheet of metal, which will be found especially useful in connection with the belts used on printing presses for feeding the paper to the press and taking the paper from the press, which may be secured to the ends of the belt without the necessity of sewing or, stitching, which will lie flat so as to present no irregular surfaces, and which may be adjusted upon the belt quickly and conveniently when it is desired to take up any slack in the belt.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view showing two ends of the belt connected together by means of a buckle constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view therethrough. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the buckle removed from the belt.
My improved buckle is formed from a single piece of metal or plate 1 stamped to form transverse slots 2 adjacent to the respective ends of the plate and transverse slots 3 arranged adjacent to the respective slots 2 and inwardly thereof. These slots 3 are preferably of less width than the slots 2. The center portion of the plate 1, that is,
- the portion between the slots 2 is in the form of a web 4: and stamped outwardly from the Specification of Letters Patent.
BatentedDec. 19, 1916.
Application filed January 28, 1916. Serial No. 74,837.
In the use of the buckle, one end of the belt is drawn through one of the slots 2 and then carried through the adjacent slot 3, across the web 4., through the other slot 3 and then through the remaining slot 2. The belt is now drawn taut through the buckle and the teeth 5 on the side of the web bite into the material of the belt to prevent accidental removal of the buckle from the belt. The other end of the belt is trained through the last-mentioned outer slot 2, across the web and then through the other slot 2 and the corresponding set ofteeth 5 bite into the material of the belt between the slots 2 so as to hold this end of the belt connected to the buckle. When it is desired to take up any slack in the belt, the last-mentioned. end thereof may be loosened between the slots 2 and then drawn through the slots until the belt has been placed under the desired ten- S1011.
It will be noted that this buckle is flat so that no uneven or irregular surfaces are pre sented to the wheels over which the belt trav-- els, or to the paper, while the buckle is so constructed as to hold the ends of the belt securely connected to each other. The extremities of the belt projecting beyond the buckle may be clipped ofi' adjacent to the re spective end of the buckle so that there will be no loose ends.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A belt buckle formed of sheet metal stamped to provide transverse slots adjacent to the respective ends thereof and similar slots adjacent to the first-mentioned slots reg p 7' r 1,209,075
spectively and inwardly thereof and spaced apart from each other, and sets of teeth stamped from the metal between said inner slots and projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the metal.
10 spectively and inwardly thereof and spaced apart from each other, and sets of teeth stamped from the metal between said slots and projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the metal.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature 3 in presence of two witnesses.
