To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, CHARLES F. ROCK- sTRoH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens, in the city ofNew York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Plate Holders and Registering Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to devicesfor engaging, holding and registering stereotype, electrotype and other printing plates, and particularly to such as are used. in conjunc tion with a grooved base. These plate engaging registering and holding devices are often lmown in the trade as register hooks.
One feature of the invention relates to a register hook construction .comprising a rotary gear 'memberfor operating a plate engaging member, said gear member being provided with teeth extending diagonally to the axis of rotation of the gear.
The invention furthermore relates to a construction comprising a groovedbase hav ing register hooksprovided with carriages comprising a main frame member and a holding member, that extend longitudinally of the grooved portion in which the hook is located and along which holding member a plate engaging hook or member is movable.
It also relates to a register hook having a carriage comprising end members, a longitudinally extending member connecting the end members, and a longitudinally extending holding member, and a plate engaging hook V movable along said longitudinally extending member. v This hook member has its plate engaging surface extending diagonally to the holding member, and the register hook comprises means, between a portion of the earriage and a surface of the hook that extends at right angles to the holding member, to maintain the plate engaging member or hook in proper position.
A further feature of theinventio'n relates to a construction comprising a base and register hooks, part of which may be termed stop register hooks and part of which may be termed locking register hooks. The stop register hooks have adjustable plate engaging members maintained in plate holding position by' removable fillers or spacers.
The locking register hooks have adjustable plate engaging members which. can be forced to plate holding position by a suitable tool. The spacers used in the stop register hooks are preferably based upon the point system and the proper allowance is made for their extending along a diagonal Or other, line which makes a definite angle to the portion of the plate engaged by the hook, sothat for example, if the plate is to be moved one-half a point, a certain spacer could be selected that would position the printing plate in the proper place.
The invention furthermore relates to other devices of construction which are more. definitely. pointed out in the claims.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention reference is made to the drawings forming a part of this, specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a diagonally grooved baseplate upon which there is secured a printing plate by meansof register-hooks, .of which a part A is termed the locking hook and another part B is termed the stop register hook. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, theregister hooks therein not being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a locking register hook. Fig. 5 is a per. spective view of a stop register hook. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing in enlarged proportions a section of a base having therein a groove in which there is located a locking register hook A and a stop register hook B. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken gaging members of the locking register hooks A. Figs. 13 and 14 are side and end views of spacers which may be used in the stop register hooks B. Figs. 15, 16 and 17 are respective partial plan, side and end views of a modified form of locking register hooks.

The grooved portions of the base and the register hooks are so constructed that the latter can be let down and lifted bodily out of the for mer. The register hook A and the register hook 13 each comprises a frame or carriage upon which a RIOVElblG Pll-llG engaging hook or member is slidably mounted, and means for holding or maintainingthe plate engag ing member in proper position.
The frame or carriage ofthe locking register hook A is indicated by the reference character 5 and comprises the upwardly extending end members 66, the lower horizontal main connecting member 7 extending therebetween and the holding rod 8 upon which the plate engaging member '9 is slidably mounted. There is located above and parallel with the holding rod 8 a screw threaded rod 10 which extends betweenand is connectedto the end members 6- 6. The plate engaglng member 9 (see Fig. 10) 1s provided with two openings 11 and 12 to -re ceive the rods 8 and 10. The upper opening 11 is counterbored to receive the hub of the internally screw threaded gear 15. This gear is secured in place by means :of the pin 13 which passes through the body portion of the .plate fengaging member 9 and which also enters the grooved portion '14 in the hub of the gear 15. The teeth 16 of this gear extend diagonally to the axis of rotation thereof and are arranged to be engaged and operated by a rack on a hand tool. From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 6 it will be noted that the teeth on this gear when in position to be engaged by the teeth of the rackextend at substantially a right angle to the plate engaging portion 9 of the hook member or plate engaging member 9. It will be noted that due to this construction the gear can be operated by simply drawing the rack over the gear in a direction parallel to the direction in which the plate engaging sur face extends, as for-example in the direction indicated by the arrow on the line w-y in Fig. 6. ;The teeth of this gear are also preferably tapered off, as is clearly shown. in Figs. 11 and 12, so that the teeth'on the rack will freely cooperate with the teeth on the gear.
The frame or carriage of the stop register hook B is indicated by the reference-character 16 and this frame comprises the upthe surface 22 of the *plateengaging member 20 and at the other end-with one of the .j
upwardly extending ends 17,-and when in this posltlon thejspacers serve as means to position and hold the plate engagingmemher in proper place on the holding rod.
In Figs. 15, 16 and 17 a modified form of:
locking register hooks is shown. In ,this construction the internally threaded gear operating member 23 is not provided with the hub 11 shown in Fig. 10, but said gear is held in place in a socket portion 24 adapted;
to receive it. Otherwise than this the general construction of-thelocking register hook shown in Figs. '15 to 17 inclusive is substantially the same as that of the register hook shown in Figs. The frames or ear- 1 riages of all the register hooks above described are provided with dependingholding legs at and H, which are shaped so as to enter the holes v3 and engage the overhanging portions 3. v

A pin passes through the lower extremity'of the leg 4s and also through the coil el-of the spring and thus serves as means to properly hold the spring in'pliwe relative to the leg.
From an inspection of the drawings it holding legs is provided at its. lower end with an enlarged or projecting portion which is located at :the rear :portion of the leg and that the spring et extends beyond the forward portion of the leg whereby the spring will force thehookrearwardly so that the projecting portion of each of :the legs will directly engage the overhanging por tion 3 of the base.

In all of the forms above described it will be observed that thesurfaces ofzthe plate engaging members which are engaged by the means for positioning and holding said members in proper place relative-to the base, namely the surface 22 of the stop register hook and the surfaces 25 and 26 of the look ing register hooks, all extend at right angles to the direction in which the holding members of the register hooks extend, thus always affording a direct thrust of the plate engaging memberagainst the means for positioning and holding the same.
It is obvious that various forms and modifications can be made without, departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention: 7
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a grooved base, a carriage, means for holding the carriage in diiferent positions in a grooved portion of the base, the carriage comprising a horizontal longitudinally extending main lower member provided with upstanding ends, a horizontal longitudinally extending rod secured to the ends and a hook mounted! on and slidable along the rod.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a grooved base and a printers registering device secured thereto comprising end members, a main connecting member therebetween, a holding rod parallel with the connecting member and a plate engaging member or hook slidably mounted on the rod, the main connecting member being provided with means to hold the device in any one of several places in a groove of the base.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a grooved base and a register hook constructed so that it can be secured directly to the base in any one of several positions in a groove thereof, said hook comprising end members, a main connecting member therebetween, a holding member parallel with the main connecting member, a plate engaging hook or member slidably mounted on the holding member, and means between the plate engaging hook and at least one of the end members to maintain said hook in proper position between the end members. A register hook comprising end members, a main connecting member and holding means extending to and between the end members. a plate engaging hook or member slidable along the holding member. and means between the plate engaging hook and at least one of the end members whereby a thrust imparted to the plate engaging hook will be transmitted to the end memher, the main connecting member being provided with depending base engaging legs.
5. A register hook comprising a main member provided with means to secure a hook directly to a base, a second or holding member parallel with the main member, a screw threaded rod parallel with the second member, a plate engaging hook slidable along the rod and holding member. and gear means between the plate engaging hook and the screw threaded rod.
6. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a base and a hook comprising a carriage, a plate engaging member movable relative to the carriage, means to maintain the plate engaging member in proper positionrelative tothe carriage and means to hold the register hook in proper position on the base, the carriage comprising upstanding members connectedby a lower horizontal main member and a rod extend ing between and connected to each of the upstanding members, the plate engaging member being slidable along the rod and maintained in proper position relative to the carriage by means engaging said plate engaging member and at least one of the upstanding members, the means which holds the register hook in proper position on the base being connected to the lower horizontal main member of the carriage.
7 A register hook comprising a carriage having a longitudinally extending main member provided with means to secure the hook to a base, a longitudinally extending holding means parallel with the mainmemher, a longitudinally extending screw threaded rod parallel with the holding means, a plate engaging hook slidable along the rod and holding means, and gear means between the hook member and screw threaded rod.
8. In a register hook the combination of a frame provided with means for securing the hook directly to the base, said frame comprising longitudinally extending holding means, an adjustable plate engaging hook or member slidable thereupon, the plate engaging portion of said last mentioned member extending diagonally to the holding means, and means between the frame and said plate engaging member to maintain the latter in the proper position, the surface of the plate engaging member which is engaged by the last mentioned means extending at right angles to the holding member.
9. A register hook having depending holding legs grooved to receive a portion of a spring which is secured thereto, said spring comprising upwardly extending portions connected by a (301i portion at their lower ends, the legs being provided with.
rearwardlv extending base engagin proiections and the spring being arranged so that it extends beyond the forward face of the leg whereby it can force the register hook to its rearmost position when in place on a base.
10. A register hook comprising a carriage. a plate engaging member movable relative to the carriage and means to maintain the plate engaging member in proper position relative to the carriage, the carriage comprising upstanding members connected bv a lower horizontal main member and a rod extending between and connected is constructed so as to engage said plate engaging member and at least one of the upstanding members, the lower main connecting member being provided with depending legs and spring means which serve flopies ofithispatent may be obtained for five cents each by addressing Washington, D. G.
as a means to hold the register hook in 13 properposition on the base.
