HENRY BECK, OF ANDREWS, INDIANA, ASSIGNQR TO WASM'UTH-ENDICOTT COMPANY,
. A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BECK, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, and resident of Andrews, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in latches of that class used generally in securing hinged doors, such as those of cabinets, refrigerators, etc., and the object thereof is to provide a substantial lock having but few parts and which will present neatness in appearance.
Another object is to construct the look so that it will occupy but a small amount'of space such as is available upon a narrow door-frame.
The above objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the latch; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 00a: of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the parts forming the base-plate and stud; Fig. 4: is a side elevation of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the cover; Fig. 6 is an elevation of the lock-bar; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking device; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the hook used in connection with the device.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same:
1 is a base-plate having a recess (2) therein and having also openings (3) extending therethrough. A stud (4) projects from the face of the base-plate at a point adjacent the recess therein, the stud being rigidly fixed to the plate. A lock-bar (5) having an opening (6) therein is mounted loosely upon the stud at a point thereon adjacent the base-plate, and has also in its rear end a re cess (7). A box-like cover (8) is secured to the base-plate, tongues (9) on the cover extending though the openings (3) in the plate to hold the same in place. The stud (t)extends through an opening (10) in the cover (8) and projects from the outer face thereof. The cover has also in one side a recess (11) through which the outer end of the lock-bar (5) extends, and has also in its Serial No. 66,250.
face an aperture (12) througli which an arm (13) of the handle (14) extends. The handle has a rounded hollow head (15) and is secured to the outer end of the stud by means of a pin (16) that extends through the walls of the rounded head of the handle and through an opening (17) in the stud. The inner end of the arm of the handle extends through the recess (7) in the lockbar and into the recess (2) in the base-plate and the arm has also shoulders (18) that ex tend adjacent the face of the lock bar respectively above and below the recess (7 therein so that the inner end of the lockbar is thereby confined to a plane adjacent the base-plate.
The device thus constructed is secured to a door adjacent its outer edge, and a plate (19) having an outwardly projecting hook (20) is secured to the j-amb so that as the door is closed the projecting end of the lockbar (5) will become engaged by the hook. The latch is operated by pulling the handle outwardly, thus causing it to swing upon its pivot so that its inner arm in moving downwardly tilts the lock-bar upon its pivot and releases the lock-bar from the hook. Pulling outwardly upon the handle has both the effect of releasing the latch and drawing the door open.
Nhat I claim is 1. In a latch, a base-plate having a rigid stud projecting therefrom; a lock-bar loosely mounted upon the stud at a point adjacent the base plate; a handle pivoted to the outer end of the stud and having an arm that engages the lock-bar at one side of the stud and actuates the same as the handle is swung upon its pivot; and a cover secured to the base-plate, having openings therein respectively for the arm on the handle and the projecting end of the lock-bar, said lock-bar and handle being adapted to turn upon axes that extend respectively at right angles to each other.
2. In a latch, a base-plate having a rigid projectingstud; a handle pivoted upon the outer end of the stud and having an inwardly extending arm; and a lock-bar loosely mounted upon the stud between the handle and adjacent face of the base-plate, and having actuated relation with the arm of the handle, said lock-bar and handle being adapted to turn upon axes that extend mounted upon the pin and having an exrespeotively at right angles to each other. tendin arm engaging the lock-bar. 1O
3. In a latch, a base-plate having a rigid In testimony whereof I affix my signature stud projecting therefrom; a lockbar in presence of tWo Witnesses.
mounted upon the stud and being adapted to HENRY BECK.
turn upon the axis thereof; a pin extending Witnesses:
through the outer end of the stud at right HAZEL ELLisoN,
angles to the aXis thereof; and a handle MARIE PARK.
