Be it known that I, KENKICHI KIMURA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at New York, county of Kings, State of New York, have made a certain .new and useful Invention in Envelops, of which the following is a specification. V

This invention relates to envelops.

The object of the invention is to provide an envelop which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and which prevents the same from being tampered with without tearing the same.

Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.

The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafterset forth, as shown by the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in theappended claims.

Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelop blank. Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the envelop with the sealing flap open. Fig. 3 is a similar View with the sealing flap partially closed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the flap completely closed and the safety flap partially closed. Fig. 5 is a similar View with the envelop completely closed. Fig. 6 is a similar view of a portion of an envelop with a modified form of safety flap.

The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.

In the usual type and form of envelops, it is comparatively easy to steam or otherwise treat the sealed flap of the envelop to cause the paste or glue thereon to lose its adhesive quality, thereby enabling one to open the envelop, read the contents therein and again seal the envelop without leaving any trace or mark to indicate that the en velop had been tampered with.

It is among the special purposes of my present invention to provide an envelop which will make tampering with the same impossible without tearing or otherwise defacing the envelop and thus leave evidence that the envelop has been tampered with.

In accordance with my invention I provide an envelop blank comprising a body portion 1 having end flaps 2, 3, and top and bottom flaps 4: 5, all of which flaps are adapted to be folded on the creases 6. The

tially rectilinear slit 7 forming a similarly shaped lip 8. The slit 7 and the lip 8 are positioned near the outer edge of the flap t and in the approximate center thereof, and within the area that usually has applied to it adhesive 9. Thus it will be seen that the under surface of the lip 8 is coated with adhesive as shown. 7

The end of the bottom flap 5 is "slit or cut to form a safety flap 10 of substantially larger size than the lip 8. The safety flap 10 is positioned at the outer edge of the flap 5 and in the approximate center thereof and within the area that usually has applied thereto adhesive 9. Thus it will be seen that the under surface of the safety flap 10 is coated with adhesive similarly to the lip 8.

After the envelop blank is made in blank form, as shown in Fig. 1 the side flap 3 is pasted on the like flap 2, and the bottom flap 5 is pasted to both of them as shown in Fig. 2. That is, the bottom flap 5,but not the safety flap 10 is pasted down. This is the usual commercial form of envelop as it reaches the public.

To seal the envelop my invention, the safety flap 1s bent downwardly, and the adhesive 9 on the upper flap 4.- and lip 8 is moistened. The lip 8 is pressed into place as shown in Fig. 3, and the safety'fiap 10 is folded or bent as indicated' in Fig. 4, to allow the same to pass through the opening 7 in the upper flap 4:. The upper flap 4 is then pressed into place, and finally the safety flap 10 is pressed down, effectively sealing the envelop in such in accordance with a way that it is impossible to open the same without tearing it at some part.

The safety flap 10 may be of any desired shape or color, to suit the particular taste or fancy of the purchaser of the envelop. I have shown two forms, a heart and a circle, either of which makes an artistic envelop, and the outer surface of the flap may be utilized for a seal or advertising or any similar purpose as may be desired.

It will be seen that when in place the safety flap covers up and hides the hole 7 and the lip 8.

It is obvious that the envelop embodying my invention may also be used for sending matter through the mail unsealed, but at the preventing the contents thereof from accidentally falling out.

Having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described in detail, structures embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and,

a lip partially cut out of the top flap, a come paratively large safety flap partially cut out of the lower flap and adapted to be folded to pass through the opening formed in the top flap by said lip, means for sealing said lip to one of said side flaps, and meansfor sealing said safety flap to said top flap.

2. A safety envelop comprising a top flap provided with a substantially rectangular lip partially cut therefrom, a bottom flap provided with a comparctively large safety flap partially cut therefrom, said safety flap adapted upon being folded to pass through the opening cut in said top flap in forming said lip, and means for sealing said safety flap to the outer surface of said top flap.

A safety envelop including a bottom flap and a top flap foldable thereon, the bottom flap having a safety flap portion partially severed therefrom and the top flap having a lip cutout of it leaving an opening therethrough, said safety flap adapted to be inserted through said opening and pasted to Copies of this patent may be obtained for the opening cut in said top flap informing said lip, and means for sealing said safety flap to the outer surface of-said'top flap and to the outer surface of said lip.

A safety envelop comprising side flaps sealed together, a top flap provided with a lip practically cut therefrom, a bottom flap provided with a comparatively. large safety flap partially cut therefrom, said safety flap being adapted only when folded to pass through the opening cut in. said top s flap in forming said lip, meansfor sealing said lip to one of said side flaps, means for sealing said safety flap to the outer surface of said lip and said top flap, and means for sealing a portion of said top flap to-theouter surface of said bottom flap.
