PUSH-TOILE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. Patented Dee, 1 9, 1916.
Application'led August 3D, 1916. Serial No. 117,699.
Kinsley, in the county of Edwards, State ofV Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Push-Poles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such` as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for connecting tractors with grain headers, the invention being more specifically a push pole for connecting such tractors and headers.
vOne important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of push pole which may be used to push a header through a field by means of a tractor, the push pole not interfering in any way with the usual steering pole of the device.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of push poles for purposes of this character.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of a push pole showing the same apy plied to a header and tractor, only parts of said header and tractor being shown. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing one end of the push pole in side elevation. Fig. t is a section through such end showing the manner of connecting the various parts by the bolts.
In carrying out the objects of the invention and in the embodiment herein disclosed there has been illustrated the front end of a tractor A and a portion of a header indicated in general at B. These parts are connected by a push pole which comprises a plurality of longitudinal members 10 preferably of strong but light lumber and between the ends of said members are arranged spacing blocks 11 which hold these ends apart. Intermediate of the ends of the members is also provided athird spacing block 12 which is of a greater thickness than the spacing blocks 11 so that the members are bowed outward at the center and thus a strong but light truss is formed. At each end of the pole there is provided a pair of plates 13, one of each pair of the plates engaging the top of the respective end of the pole while the remaining plate of the'pairv engages the bottom of the pole. Both of the plates in each pair project over the ends of the members 10 and are provided with vertically alined openings 14 therein so that a pivot pin 15 may be removably mounted in these openings. In order to hold the members, end spacing block and plates together,
bolts lare employed which pass through suitable openings in the plates, the members and the end spacing blocks thus clamping all of these plates together. Similar bolts 17 hold the center spacing block in position.
Pivoted on each of the pins l5 is a bracket 17 which is provided with one or more bolt receiving openings 18 so that bolts 19 may be used to connect the bracket to the header or tractor as desired. By means of this construction a strong but light push pole is formed which being pivoted at each end to the respective devices, enables square corners to be turned in the field by the aid of the guide wheels usually employed on the pole of a header. It will be observed that under these conditions the header may turn a sharp corner while the tractor follows around in a short curve. There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and 'for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
VI-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A push pole for connecting tractors and grain headers comprising a plurality of members extending longitudinally of the pole, spacing blocks between the ends of said members, a spacing block between the members intermediate their ends, the last- Copies of this'patent may be obtained f or ,to a header.
mounted in the openings of the plates, and brackets pivoted on said pins and provided with bolt receiving openings whereby to afford means for connection to a tractor and In testimony whereof, I zux my signature, in .the presence of two witnesses.
