WILLIAM W. MGCLAY AND CLARRENCE G. MoCLAY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MAILING-CARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. I2, I916.
Application filed July 17, 1916. Serial No. 109,822.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. MoCLAY and CLARRnNon G. MoCLAY, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Cards, of which the following is a specification. I
The article which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is a mailing card designed more particularly for carrying advertising matter, and also provided with a detachable portion which may be used by the recipient as a return card, coupon, discount slip or the like.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved device of the kind stated which is made up of a single sheet of paper shaped to form a series of foldable flaps as will be described in detail hereinafter.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification. I
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device before it is folded up; Fig. 2 shows the device partly folded,
and Fig. 3 shows last step of the folding.
operation.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a sheet 5 having top and bottom flaps 6 and 7, respectively, which are integral with the sheet, and adapted to be folded over on one side thereof. One end of the sheet 5 also has an integral flap 8 having the same dimensions as the sheet. The flap 8 has a bottom flap 9 which is detachable, a line 10 of perforations being provided to facilitate this. The outer end of the flap 8 has a small flap 11. All these flaps, except the flap 11 are rectangular, the said flap 11 being triangular.
The flap 9 is designed to be used by the recipient as a return card, a coupon or the like, and for this purpose it is suitably inscribed on one side as shown in Fig. 1.
To fold the device ready for mailing, the flap 6 is folded down on the sheet 5, and the flap 7 is folded partly down over the folded flap 6. The flap 8 is then swung upward far enough to permit the fiap 9 to be tucked in between the flaps 6 and 7, after which the flaps S and 9 are swung down toward the sheet 5 to position the flap 9 squarely between the fiaps 6 and 7, with the flap 8 on top of the flap 7. The parts folded in this manner produce a flat package having the flap 11 projecting from one end, as shown in Fig 3. This flap 11 is now tucked in between the sheet 5 and the flap 6 as shown in Fig. 3, which completes the operation and leaves the device ready for mailing, the address being written on the exposed side of the flap 8. To open up the package, the flap 11 must first be pulled out, after which the other parts can be readily unfolded.
The device is very simple and cheap, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed. The flap 11 and the manner in which the several parts are folded securely holds the same in folded position without danger of the package becoming unfolded while in transit.
We claim:
A mailing device comprising a sheet having top and bottom flaps foldable down above the sheet, the sheet also having an end flap provided with a bottom flap and a locking flap at its outer end, the last mentioned bottom flap being foldable between the first mentioned top and bottom flaps, and the end flap being foldable on top of the top flap, the locking flap being free for insertion between the sheet and the first mentioned bottom flap.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
WILLIAM W. MoOLAY. CLARRENOE G. MoCLAY.
