HEATER.
Application filed February 25, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HANDLEY VAN Violins, a citizen of the United States, residing at Craig, in the county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to improvements in heaters, especially heaters of the type employed for heating schoolrooms in rural districts and for other similar uses and in which the stove or furnace is provided with a shield which extends around the same and is spaced therefrom, and in which fresh air is supplied to the chamber or space formed between the stove or furnace and the shield and is heated by radiation from the stove or furnace, the object of my invention being to effect improvements in the construction of the shield whereby it is provided with a door or movable member, which may be opened so as to expose one side or a portion of the stove or furnace and thus enable heat of the latter to be availed of by direct radia tion so that persons may warm themselves thoroughly and quickly immediatel at the heater and without waiting to be warmed by the warmed air of the room.
With the above and other objects in view the inventionconsists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a heater constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the movable door or member of the shield in open position and exposing a portion of the stove or furnace. Fig. 2is avertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views. 1
For the purposes of this specification stove or furnace such as is commonly used for heating rural schools or the like is 'indicated at 1 and is shown as of cylindrical form. The smoke pipe 2 leads from the center of the top of the stove or furnace. Within the scope of my invention the stove or furnace may be of any suitable construction.
In accordance with my invention I provide a shield 3 which is here shown as cylindrical but which may be of any suitable shape, according to the shape of the stove or furnace. The diameter of the shield is greater than that of stove or furnace Specification of Letters Patent.

and the shield is arranged concentrically with respect to the stove or furnace and around the same so that a space i is formed between the wall of the stove or furnace and the inner side of the shield. The lower end of the shield is secured on an annular member 5 of a supporting base or frame with which the stove or heater is provided, said base or frame also including radial bars 6 and down turned supporting feet 7 at the outer ends of said bars. The shield comprises an outer wall 8 and an inner wall 9 which are spaced apart as at 10 and are connected together at suitable points as by means of radially arrangedbolts 11.
The spaced walls of the shield may be made of suitable material. The upper portion of the outer shield wall 8 is secured by the bolts 11 to the outer side of the vertical web of a cross sectionally angular rim 13. The neck 1.4 of the fuel door 15 and the neck 16 of the ash pit extend out from the stove or furnace through openings in the shield, the fuel door 15 and the ash pit door 17 having their casings or frames 18, 19 riveted or otherwise secured on the outer side of the shield. I also. in accordance with my invention, provide the shield with an opening 20 of suitable width and which eX- tends from the base ring 5 to the rim 13 and at one side of its opening and immediately next the necks of the fuel and ash pit doors or openings is a partition wall 21 which is arranged radially, closes the space between the inner and outer walls of the shield and also extends inwardly to the wall of the stove or heater so as to close the space between the stove or heater and the shield at that point. Preferably the cold air tube 22 is arranged on the side of the shield nearest the partition 21 and at right angles to the doors 15, 17 and near the bottom of the shield, this tube supplying cold air, fresh from the outside, to the space between the stove or furnace and the shield, to be heated and caused to pass outwardly into the room. I also provide a movable door or member 23 for the shield, which is here shown as segmental and which is adapted to fit between the inner and outer walls of the shield and to be moved toward and from the partition 21 in order to open or close the shield and hence expose a portion of the stove or furnace when direct heat and radiation therefrom is desired or to complete the incasing of the stove or furnace by the shield this is preferable. This door or movable shield member isalso here shown as having 7 an outer wall 24 and an inner wall 25 spaced apart and connected together by bolts 26 and the said door or movable shield member is provided at the sidewhich is opposed to the 7 wall or partition 21 with a flange or wall 27 whichextends inwardly to the Wall of tlie' stoye or heater and is arranged 111 slidable relation thereto.
7 Hence whether the movable door or movable shield member 23 is opened or closed the space between its outer or front edge and the stove .or heater is derstood.
always closed by the wall 27, aswill be unhafn'dle' 28 and is also provided with supporting rollers 29 which are mounted on axles, 80' and between the inner andouter have" it understood that changes may be The said door ;or movable mem- 'ber of-the shield is'providedwith a suitable side of said opening and extending from the shield to the stove or furnace and a door to close said opening, slidably mounted, and provided also with a partition wall extending inwardly to the stove or furnace to close the space between said door and the stove or furnace.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
