Description
C. T. MOON.
RECEPTACLE SUPPORT AND COVER.
APPLICATION mu) NOV. l. 1915.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
CHARLES T. MOON, 0F SCOTTSVILLE, VIRGINIA.
RECEPTACLE SUPPORT AND COVER.
Application filed November 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Crmnnns T. Moon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottsville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle Supports and Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention. is an improved support and cover for numerous kinds of receptacles such as butter and lard tubs, pickle jars, etc.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed arrangement of parts which may well be used beneath the counters of grocery stores and the like, provision being made whereby the receptacle support and the receptacle thereon may be swung laterally, and whereby the cover of the re ceptacle is raised by this operation.
With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a rear edge view of a portion of a counter showing the application of the invention beneath the same; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the counter taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and showing more clearly the arrangement of the invention beneath the same; Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections taken respectively on the planes of the lines 38 and 1- 1E of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the bearings of the upright shaft which carries the receptacle support and cover.
In specifically describing the invention disclosed in the drawings above briefly described, reference will be made to such drawings by similar characters placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views. To this end, S indicates an upright support in the form of a wall to the upper end of which one end of a common type of counter ,C is secured, the front edge of said counter being equipped with the usual depending apron Secured by screws or the like to the inner side of the support S acent the inner edge Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, rare.
Serial No. 59,093.
of said support, are the upper and lower bearings 1 and 2 respectively, the bearing 1 being preferably in the form of a right angulai-bracket, while the lower bearing is of similar construction with the exception that its horizontal arm 3 is bent upwardly as seen at 41 and then inwardly to provide an ear 5 spaced above and parallel with the body of said arm 3.
Rotatably mounted in openings formed respectively in the horizontal arm of the bean ing 1 and in the ear 5, is an upright rotatable shaft 6 whose lower end rests on the body portion of the arm 3, whereby it is held against downward movement. Mounted for vertical adjustment on the shaft 6 is a collar 7 normally held against movement by a set screw or the like 8, said collar being preferably formed integrally with one end of a bifurcated supporting bracket 9 which is secured by any preferred means to the under side of a receptacle supporting shelf 10,
the latter being preferably, though not necessarily, of circular formation.
Spaced above the shelf 10 is an appropriate horizontal receptacle cover 11 preferably carried by a bifurcated bracket 12 having at one end a slide 13 mounted on the shaft 6, said slide being equipped with a laterally projecting stop 14 which contacts with the upright edge of an additional stop 15 preferably formed integrally with and depending from the horizontal arm of the bearing 1. Thus, movement of the cover 11 from a position beneath the counter C is prevented, this being expedient for a purpose yet to appear.
Secured by any preferred means to the slide 13 or to another appropriate part carried by the cover 11, and depending from such part, is a pin or the like 16 whose lower end rests on an appropriate cam 17 partially surrounding the shaft 6 and having an inclined upper surface, the cam being shown in the present embodiment of the invention in the form of a helical rib.
In applying the invention to use, the set screw 8 is loosened and the collar 7 is so adjusted on the shaft 6 as to permit the receptacle It to be so supported by the shelf 10 as to allow its upper end to be normally closedby the cover 11. The screw 8 is then tightened and the device is ready for operation. When access is necessary to the contents of the receptacle, th support 10 may tobe removed from its normal position beneath the counter C, it being obvious that this operation will turn the shaft hand will beswung laterallytto allow said receptacle thus cause the cam 17 to raise the cover 11. On the other hand, when the receptacle is returned to its normal position by again swinging the shelf 10 inwardly, the cam will I allow the cover 11 to descend upon said receptacle. V
The foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, will be ample to allow those skilled in the art to which the inventionrelates to readily understand the construction and. operation thereof. Itwill be noted that all features of construction are extremely simple, yet efficient and durable, and; that receptacles of numerous diameters and lengths may be supported upon the shelf .10 by proper adjustment thereof.
In the drawings, certain specific details of construction have been shown for illustrative purposes and in the foregoing such details have been described, but obviously numerous changes may be made within the,
raising said cover automatically when the support is swung laterally.
2. In combination, an upright rotatable shaft, a receptacle support secured to and projecting laterally therefrom, a receptacle cover above the support, and a cam on the shaft for raising the cover when the shaft Qqpies .91 this patent may .be .cbtained for shaft, a receptacle support secured to and projecting laterally therefrom, a receptacle 1 cover above the support and having a slide mounted on the shaft, a cam on the shaft for raising the cover, and means for preventing rotation of the slide with the shaft.
4. In combination, an upright rotatable shaft, a receptacle support secured to and projecting laterally therefrom, a receptacle cover above the support and having a slide mounted on the shaft, means for preventing rotation of said slide with the shaft, a pin depending from the cover, and a cam passing partially around the shaft and having an inclined upper surface on which the lower end of the pin rests.
5. In combination, upper and lower bearings, an upright shaft rotatably mounted therein, a receptacle support secured to and extending laterally from said shaft, a receptacle cover above the support and having a slide mounted on the shaft, :1 stop depend ing from the upper bearing adjacent the outer side of the slide, an additional step on said slide abutting the aforesaid stop to prevent lateral movment of the cover, and a cam on the shaft for raising said cover when said shaft is turned by swinging the support laterally.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
