Description

J. F. DRAKE.
PENCIL.
APPLICATION HLED JAN. 17, 1916.
htensmi Nov, 28, 1916,
naw-Wan Elite Mum;
JAIWES FRANK DRAKE, F ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
PENCIL.
Application filed January 17, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Janine FRANK DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to pencils, and more particularly to the class'of automatic pushpoint pencils.
The primary object of the -invention is the provision of a pencil of this character wherein the lead isiheld in a novel manner so that it can be pushed from the body of the pencil at the writing end thereof and firmly clamped when in use, the pencil being readily clipped in the pocket of the user, the clip serving to firmly hold or re lease the lead in the body of the pencil.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pencil of this characterwherein the same is constructed with a. clip which has the dual function of fastening the pencil in the pocket of the user when not in use and firmly clan'rpingr the lead to hold. it in protruded position from the body or re tracted therein.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliflb n' and eflicient in its operation, strong,
durable and inexpensive of nnnnifactin'e.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement-of parts exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and. the scope'of the application of which will be indicated in the claiin'hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof; and Fig. is a sectional view on the line 3-S of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the pencil comprises a body 5 preferably made from wood, and is of any desirable external shape, having formed centrally therein a bore for receiving: a lead stick ii which is freely slidable in said bore and is adapted to be protrlulcd through the tapered writing end 7 of the body 5 when the pencil is to be used. On the other or opposite end of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28. 1 S916.
Serial No. 72,534.
body 5 is a ferrule 0r sleeve 8, as usual, in
which is fitted an eraser 9 of the usual form. Provided in the body 5 and (ac-extensive for a greater portion of the length of the central bore therein for receiving the lead 6 is a slot 10 which opens through the outer surface of the body to accommodate the parallel extensions 11 of a clamping sleeve 12, which latter is located within the bore in the body 5 for receiving the inner end of the lead (5 so that on the movement of the sleeve the lead will be protruded through the ta per-ed end 7 or retracted within the body of the pencil.
Pivotally mounted between the parallel portions 11 of the clamping sleeve 12 is a clip finger or arm 13 which serves as a lever, one end being formed with a ball. terminal 14, while its opposite end is pointed to provide a biting spur'or tip 15, which extends through the slot 10 into the bore for biting engagement internally of the body 5 of the pencil when swinging the arm 13 outwardly away from the said body of the pencil, thereby securely holding the lead 6 in its adjusted position. This arm 13 serves as a clip for fastening the pencil inthe pocket of the user when not in use. 0n swinging the arm 18 inwardly toward the body of the pencil the spur or tip is disengaged from the body of the pencil 5 so that the lead 6 can be moved in reverse directions for the protruding of the lead through the tapered end 7 of the body 5 when the pencil is to be used or to retract the lead within the body when said pencil is not in use. The sleeve 12 is preferably tapered toward the closed end. of the body 5, thereby permitting the insertion of varying sizes of leads therein for use. After alead has been used up, an other can be inserted, thus permitting an unlimited number of leads to he used in one pencil stock, or barrel.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the con strnct-i on and manner of operation of the pencil will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
claim:
In a pencil, a centrally bored body, the bore being extended through one end thereof, said body being further provided with a slot opening through one side and entendedi for substantially a greater portion of thev Having thus described my invention, I
lid
in the wall of the bore in the body for looking the sleeve in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two itnesses.
