To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEssn P. CARTER, a citizen of the United 'States, residing at Rochelle, in the county of Wilcox and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swinging Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of swinging chairs.

One of the objects of the invention is to produce a swinging chair of a novel construction whereby pressure upon the foot rest or upon the back of the chair by the occupant of the chair will cause the back and foot rest to assume an angle with relation to the seat of the chair and thus convert the same into a reclining chair.

Another object of the invention is to produoe a swinging chair which may be readily converted into a reclining chair by the occupant thereof and which shall include the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness, strength and durability.

With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective 30 View of a chair constructed in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesame showing the device converted into a reclining chair.

The side members or bars 1 for the seat :5 of the chair extend each a suitable distance beyond the seat proper, the said seat being indicated by the numeral 2. The seat is preferably constructed of slats arranged transversely of and secured to the bars 1,

0 and the said bars at the front end of the seat have pivotally secured thereto, as at 3, front members or'bars 4. These front members 4 are connected by a transverse bar 5 and are pivotally connected, adjacent their a lower ends, as at 6, to the side members 7 of the foot rest 8. The transverse bar normally serves as a connecting element for the bars 4, but also provides a stop which en gages with the members 7 and to prevent the a back of the chair, hereinafter to be referred t0 in detail, from swinging or to hold the said back in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 when the chair is converted into a reclining chair.

The side members 7 extend in opposite directions from the front members 4, and the rear ends of the same are pivotally connected, as at 9, to the lower ends of the side members 10 of the back 11. The side members 10 are likewise pivotally connected, as at 12, to the side members 2 of the seat, directly to the rear of the said seat. The numerals 13 designate the arm rests which are also connected to the side members 1 of the seat. The chair is supported by suitable suspending members, such as chains, as illustrated in the figures of the drawing, the rear suspending chains 14 being one secured to each of the side bars 2 of the seat at the rear ends thereof and the front supporting chains 15 being connected to the front members 4 above their pivotal connections 3 with the side members 1 of the chair.

With a chair constructed as above described,.it will be noted that when the occupant thereof exerts a pressure on the back 11, the side members. 10 thereof will be swung upon their pivots 12, swinging the side members 7 of the foot rest 8 until the same are contacted by the bar 5 which holds the foot rest 8, seat 2 and back 11 at almost a horizontal position, and,'of course, the inclination of the back and foot rest may be regulated to any desired angle by the pressure of the occupant of the chair.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to Which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
