Specification of Letters Patent. PQLtQntqBdl NQW. 2 19116,
Application filed February 19, 1915. Serial No. 9,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the countylof Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Sifter-Top Gontainera, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to sifter top containers and has more particular reference to containers of this type adapted for the packaging and the using of talcum powder and the like.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of a container of this general type particularly adapted for the need of travelers, thecontainer being so constructed that a powder puff or chamois may be included within its compass and yet be separated from the powder itself so that the shaking of the hand-bag or grip in which the con tainer is placed will not cause an undue amfrfount of powder to be deposited upon the p1 While it is intended that the perforations in the sifter top be closed when the container is arranged to be placed in a hand-b ag or grip, this invention contemplates the prevention of the issuance of appreciable amounts of powder shouldthe user neglect to adjust the top to closed position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container so shaped and proportioned that it cannot be easilv overturned or knocked to the floor from a dresser or from a window ledge or basin in the washroom of a rapidly moving train.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a container for talcum powder and the like which will be of compact form, occupying little space in the grip or hand-bag, and which will be pleasing in appearance and economically constructed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the auxiliary cover with which the container embodying my invention is provided; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the container body; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken centrally through the container with the parts assembled.
()n the drawings it will be noted that the embodiment of the invention shown consists primarily of a body A carrying a sifter top B and an auxiliary cover C. The body in the present instance consists of a lower portion 5 and an upper portion 6, together forming a cylindrical container of diameter materially greater than its height. The bottom portion is provided with an inwardly extending head 7 against which the upper portion G is adapted to engage when the parts are assembled. This portion has a downwardly extending flange 8 disposed within and frictionally engaged with the upper edge 9 of the lower portion 5,the upper extremity of the edge 9 forming an abutment against which the auxiliary cover may be closed, as will be later described. The upper portion 6 is cut away centrally to provide an aperture in which is engaged the lower edge 10 of the inner part 11' of the sifter top, this sifter top being of the ordinary form, having a stationary inner part and a movable outer part 12, both provided with perforations which are adapted to aline to permit sifting of the powder. The auxiliary cover C is curved upwardly at its center and is provided with 'a downwardly extending peripheral flange 13 adapted to engage the outer surface of the flange 8 of the upper portion 6 of the body and to rest against the upper edge of the lower portion 5. These parts are preferably so constructed that the auxiliary cover provides an appreciable space both above the sifter top and above the surrounding portion of the upper part 6 of the body, in which space may be placed a chamois or powder pufl 14. This powder pufi may be of sufiil'zient thickness to cause it to be pressed against the sifter top when the auxiliary coveris in place, so that should-the apertures of the two parts of the sifter top be in registra tion, pressure against them of the .powder puff or chamois will prevent an appreciable discharge of powder regardless of shaking or jarring of the container. This arrangement also prevents the wasting of any of the powder into the grip or hand-bag from the container.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A sheet metal powder container and sifter comprising a body having an upstanding side Wall and a top having a depending flange which is tightly embraced Within said wall of the body, said top having a central aperture; a sifter top having a perforated 'top plate and a depending-neck integral therewith, the edge of said neck being flanged to embrace above and below the edge of the aperture of said top; a perforated rotatable closing cap mounted on said Sifter top and inclosing and engaging the same by a depending flange; and an auxiliary closure inclosing the sifter top and having a depending flange removably engaging around the depending flange of said top and opposing the edge of said Wall of the body; said auxiliary closure being adapted to receive a puff the middle part of which is held on the said perforated top plate and the marginal part of which is received in the inclosed space around said sifter top.
