Be it known that I, llirnn'r NicnnLsoN, citizen of the Ilmted States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and `State of It is one of the objectsif the invention to provide a tool of this character wherein any desirable contour of knife may beemployed to shape the material to any desired cross section.
A further object of the invention is to provide guiding means for regulating the depth of out7 and to provide for adjustment of such guiding means in different elevations parallel with or angular to theaxis of rotation of the cutter.
further object is to provide adjustable guiding means for regulating and main; taining the line of cut with respect to the side margins of the material operated upon.
Other objects and features of the invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1, is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional view illustrative of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 9., is a. side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

As illustrated, 1, designates a support which may be in the form of a easing having end walls 2 and 3, and 'side walls 4. Handles t and 5 are secured to the end walls 2 and 3, respectively, preferably in alined relation. At least one of the handles is hollow preferably handle 4, and an operating shaft 5, extends through the handle and into the casing 1. The end wall 2, is provided with a bearing G, for the shaft 5, and the wall 3, is provided with a bearing 7, therefor. In order to prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft 5, in the casing 1, I provide collars 8 and 9, thereon, which may be fixed bv set screws in engagement with the bearings 6 and 7.

present form I 'provide a cutter block 10, on the opposite sides of which blades 11, are secured by screws 12, the latter entering the shaft 5, to non-rotatively connect the block thereon. For purposes of illustration, I have shown ogee formingblades, but it will be understood that the device of my inven tion is capable of operation with any kind of blades usually employed in shaping'wood. A. flexible shaftiiig is shown coupled to the shaft 5, at 14', so as to operate the cutter as the device is advanced by the operator from the handles 4- and 5.
In order to guide the cutter along a strip of wood to be shaped thereby. and to hold said cutter in'a line of travel at'the desired distance from either side, I provide adjusting devices which are disposed on the end walls 2 and 3, and which are in all respects similar in construction and operation, thereby only necessitating av description of one. On the wall a threaded hub 15, is formed with which a support 16, has threaded engagement for longitudinal :uljustment parallel with the shaft 5. The support or rod 16, may be provided with a thumb screw 1T, and a nut lock 18. On the support 16, I mount a bracket 19, having bearings in which a guide roller 20, is journaled for free rotation about a vertical axis; In order to prevent displacementof the roller in its bracket from the position shown, and
-to permit of bodily adjustment thereof with respect to the end wall Q, I may provide the bracket 19, with guide pins 21, which project through suitable openings in the end wall 2, for free longitudinal movement therein.
` It will be readily seen trom. the foregoing construction, that the guide rollers 20, are independently adjustable so as to guide the cutter in a path of travel either centrally or in a position laterally of the ccnter of the surface to be shaped.
In order to regulate the depth of the cut, I provide guide devices which are disposed on opposite sides ot the cutter and which may be in the form of rollers 22. Both of these depth cutting guide devices are similar in construction and operation, and therefore only one need be described in detail.
At each end of the roller 22, I provide `the same with a suitable hub 23. which is .'i arranged in pairs, one pair of screw rods an adjusting screw 26,' which has threaded engagement with artapped borei'n a block 27, projecting inwardly from the casing. The screw 26, may be provided with a thumb nut 28, foi-,adjustment thereof.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided on opposite sides of the cutter, independent adjustable depth cutting guides having independent devices at each end thereof, whereby they may be adjusted vat different elevations in parallel relation with the shaft 5, or in angular relation with respect thereto. lVith the form of cutter shown in Fig. ll, an angular adjustment of ,the rollers 22, would be necessary but in using other forms of cutters, parallel or any similar adjustments would be necessary. nimportant feature consists in the adjustment afforded whereby one portion of the cutting edge of the blade may be restricted toa shallow cut whereas another portion may be adjusted for a relatively deeper cut, in other words, considering the form of cutter shown in Fig. l, the rollers` 22, may be adjusted so' that the larger knife portion will have a relativelv shallow cut, whereas a smaller knife portion will have 'a relatively deep cut.
It is believed from the foregoing that the utility and advantages of the invention will be clear and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such .limitations as'the claims may import.
I claim:
1. A wood cutting device of the class described comprising in combination` a casmg, a cutter 'revolubly mounted in said casing, independently adjustable screw rods being disposed o n each side of the axis of rotation of said cutter, a bracket carried by each screw rod, and a roller device carried by cach pair of screw rods, the respective roller device terminals being pivotally supported by the respective brackets for adjusting the said rollers at an angle to the axis of rotation of said cutter` as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hand advanced wood cutting device comprising in combination, a casing provided with end walls` handles mounted on said end walls in alined relation with re` speet to cach other, an operating shaft mounted in said casing in axial relation with respect to said handles and extending through one thereof-for connection with the source, of power, a cutter mounted on said shaft, brackets disposed one adjacent each end of said cutter` means movable relatively to the support to adjust said brackets, a guide roller carried by each bracket, guide pins rigid with each bracket and extending through the said end walls of the casing to hold said brackets against movement laterally relatively to said casing, rollers disposed on opposite sides of the cutter, support means for the rollers adjustable vertically relatively to the casing to move said rollers at different elevations either in parallel or angular relation with respect to the axis of rotation of said cut-ter to regulate the depth of the cut. the respective rollers being pivoted at their respective ends to the said adjustable means1 as and for the purpose set forth.
