To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, BERNARD S. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Strainers and Regulating-Valves for 0il- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a. combined strainer and regulating valve particularly adapted for use in connection with liquid fuel burners applied under boilers or other similar apparatus.
The objects of my invention are :First,
to construct a device of the character above described which will uniformly feed and regulate liquid fuel to a burner without interruptions due to any foreign substances in the fuel which would tend to clog up the burner. Second, to construct a device which will regulate the fuel in such a manner that the flow will be regular and proportional to the number of turns the valve is open and capable of an adjustment more sensitive than is possible with an ordinary globe valve or cook used at present in connection with oil burners, Third, to construct a combined strainer and valve which is compact in form, can be readily taken apart, inspected, cleaned, or assembled, and installed for use, cheap to manufacture, and broken parts quickly replaced. Fourth, to provide a combined strainer and valve in one apparatus so that the oil passing through the device is filtered or strained before reaching theregulating valve.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the detailed description to be hereinafter given.
The invention consists of structural char acteristics and relative arrangements .of eleinents which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of the bottom of the combined strainer and valve; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line ill-Ill of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line TIL-HT of Fig. 2
and Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line TVTV of Fig. 2.
Tn the drawings 1 is the hollow body of the combined strainer and valve which is provided at one end with a threaded discharge opening 2, to which is adapted to be connected any form of fuel burner, not shown, and which forms no part of the present invention. At the other end of the body 1 of the strainer is a second and larger threaded opening 3, in which is screwed a bonnet 4: having an internally threaded opening 5, through which passes a valve spindle or stem 6 having a section threaded as at 7, to engage the threaded opening 5, as shown. A gland or screw cap 8 is removably attached by means of threads in the outer end of the bonnet 4, for the purpose of closing the opening in the bonnet 4:, and forcing any. suitable packing 9, held in a recess, so as to make a, tight joint between the valve stem 6 and the bonnet 4:.
10 is,.a hand wheel attached to the outer end of the spindle 6, for the purpose of turning the same and properly adjusting its position with respect to the discharge opening for purposes to be presently described.
The body portion 1 may be provided with two lateral openings 11 and 12, either of which may be the inlet for feeding the oil or fuel to the strainer, while the other opening may be closed by a. plug 13, or used for cleaning by blowing steam or air through the strainer after the oil supply through the other opening has been shut off. Surrounding the section of the valve spindle or stem 6 between the inlet opening 11 or 12,. and discharge 2 is provided aremovable strainer-'14 preferably of cylindrical form. as shown, having a series of perforations or openings 15 and closed at one end by an annular .disk 16, Whose central opening closely fits about the spindle or stem 6 which passes through said disk. The opposite end of the strainer 14:, from that of the disk 16 is open and is bent outwardly to form an annular exterior flange 17 which removably engages or seats itself against an annular lug 18 formed on the inner side of the body 1, near the inlet opening 11. Adjacent the discharge end of the body 1 and made integral therewith is provided a depressed section 19 having an upper-narrow slot 20 connected with a lower cavity 21, said cavity being in communication with the hollow section or interior chamber formed within the body 1 and containing the strainer M.
22 is a passage way preferably circular in cross-section and of a bore equal to the diameter of the stem 6, disposed within the body 1 near the discharge end of the combined strainer and valve. Said passage way 22 is superimposed, parallel to and in communication with the longitudinal slot 20 at its lower side and in communication at one of its ends with the discharge opening 2 and at its other end with the chamber within the body 1. lChe passage way 22 is provided at its discharge end with a valve seat 23, adapted to receive the needle point 24 on the discharge end of the valve spindle or stem 6, said stem being rotatably supported and slidably guided in the passage way 22 over the slot 20, for purposes to be presently described.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The parts having been assembled and arranged as shown in Fig. 2, the fuel oil to be filtered and regulated is supplied under pressure into the feed opening 11, and forced around the stem or spindle 6 into the strainer and thence through the openings or perforations 15 in the strainer 14, said oil pressure, it will be seen, firmly holding said strainer 14 by means of the flange 17 against the lug 18, thereby preventing any leakage tween the strainer and body 1, and compelling all the oil to pass through the strainer. All impurities in the liquid fuel are prevented from passing through the strainer '14, and the filtered oil passes out into the chamber within body 1 to the lower cavity 21 from whence it rises through the section of the narrow slot 20, not covered or closed by the discharge or controlling end of the spindle 6. After the oil passes through slot 20, it flows into passage way 22 and finally through the discharge 2, to the burner as well understood in this class of devices.
In order to regulate the supply of oil passing through the strainer, all that is necessary is to rotate the hand wheel 10, and the sharp edge 25 of the needle point 24 of the spindle 6 will travel away from or toward the discharge opening 2 and over the upper end of the slot 20, as shown in dotted position in Fig. 2, and form a rectangular opening of more or less area or of varying dimensions, and thereby absolutely control the amount of oil flowing through the strainer directly proportional to the number of turns the hand wheel 10 is turned. \Vhen it is' desired to cut off the supply of oil to the burner, the needle point 24 of the spindle (3 is forced against its seat 23, when all communication with the slot 20 and discharge-opening 2 is shut off, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
The width of the slot 20 is such that any foreign material in the oil which will pass through the openings 15 in the strainer 14 will also readily pass through the slot 20 through the joint be-- and hence prevent any possibility of 'the strainer becoming inoperative. All impurities held back by the strainer 14, can be quickly flushed out through the opening 12 after removing the plug 13, and should it at any time be desirous of removing the strainer 14 for cleaning or replacing the same for a new one or one of different sized perforations, all that is necessary is to unscrew the bonnet 4, when the strainer 14 attached to the spindle 6 will pass out of the opening 3.
From the foregoing disclosure of construction and mode of operation of the invention, it will be seen. that a combined strainer and valve has been produced which most efliciently accomplishes all the functions and advantages set up in the statement of invention at a minimum cost, and provides in one device, occupying a minimum of space, not only a strainer of large surface and capacity owing to its cylindrical form, but a regulating valve, and the oil passes through. the strainer before it passes through the said regulating valve.
If preferred, when the oil supply to the burner is to be cut ofi, the sharp edge 25 of the needle point, 24, of the spindle (5, may be left at any point it is set for operation, and the oil supply cut off by means of an external valve in the fuel supply pipe, not shown and forming no part of this device, the idea being to have the regulating valve set ready for operation, when the burner is started up again.
That I claim is:
1. A combined strainer and valve comprising a hollow body having an inlet, a discharge passage-way, a. cavity in communication with the interior of the body and having a slot connection with the passageway, a valve spindle within the body portion having its inner end movably supported in the passage-way and controlling the slot connection with the passage-way, means for adjusting the inner end of the spindle over the slot connection, and a strainer within the body portion and interposed between inlet and discharge passage-way.
2. A combined strainer and valve comprising a hollow body having an inlet, a discharge passage-way, a cavity in communication with the interior of the body and having a slot connection with the passage-way, a. valve spindle within the body portion having its inner end movably supported in the 11 assage-wav and cor.=,.olling the slot connection with. the passage-11y, means for adjusting the spindle over the slot connection, and a strainer within the body the valve spindle and interposed between inlet and discharge openings.
3. A combined strainer and valve comprising a hollow body having an inlet, a discharge passage-way surrounding 1 2 5 a cavity in commu- 13C mo em tam;
nication with the interior of the body and having a slot connection with the passageway, a valve spindle within the body portion having its inner end movably supported in and tightly fitting the passage-way and controlling the slot connection with the passage-way, said slot connection comprising a rectangular opening, means for adjusting the inner end of the spindle over the rectangular opening, a cylindrical strainer surrounding the valve spindle within the body portion and interposed between the inlet and the discharge passage-way, said strainer having the end near the discharge supported by the spindle and the other end by the inner wall 'of the hollow body.
4. A strainer casing comprising a, hollow body having an inlet, a discharge passageway, a cavity in communication with the interior of the body and having a slot connection with the passage-way, a valve spindle within the body portion having its inner arge passage- Y connection comprislnga rectangular opening, means for adjusting the inner end of the spindle over the rectangular opening.
