MATCH-STRIKING SURFACE ,FOR PIPES.
ilpeclaoatlon of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28. 1916.
Application illed April 1, 1916. Berll No. 88,811.
To all whom it may concern Be it 'known that I, FRANK FnUs'rAcLio, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at South Porcupine, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada have invented certain new and useful fmprovements in Match-Strikn Surfaces for Pipes, of which the fellowin is a specification.
This invention re ates to new and useful improvements in match striking surfaces for pi es.
lhe primary object of the invention is the revision of an article of manufacture consisting of a match striking surface readily locked upon the stem of a smoking pipe.
A further object of the device is to provide for use upon a tobacco pipe of any ordinary construction, a striking surface for matches which is readily attached to the pipe stem b the owner t ereof and may'be removed an em loyed with a different pipe whenever desire A still further object is the provision of a device for increasing the p ensures of tobacco smoking by means of supplying a striking surface for matches removab y carried by the pipe stem adacent the point of desired ignition for t e tobacco and whereby the pipe may be lighted more advantageously.
With these general objects in view and others that wil appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the saine consists in the novel combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully descri ed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which ike designating characters refer to the corresponding parts throughout the several viewsz-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe provided with the present device. Fig. 2 is an enlar ed elevational view of the opposite side o the pipe stem from that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view through the pipe stem taken u on line III-III of Fig. 2. Fi 4 is a similar enlarged sectional view o one side portion of the stem. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the band connection of the device taken upon line V-V of Fig.,2, and Fig. 6 is a pers ective view of the complete device detache It will be understood that the present device broadly comprises a striking plate 10 designed for fiat locking engagement with any desirable portion of a tobacco pipe such as the stem 11 of the ipe 12 in connection with which the pipe is iereiii illustrated, the said pipe being of the general type having a tobacco receiving bowl 13 and a mouthpiece 14.
The said striking late 10 is preferably of slightly arcuate form in cross section, as liest illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings and is provided with oppositely extending attaching bands 15 and 16 projecting laterall substantially midway of its opposite en s 17, the said bands having a general curvature corresponding to t at of the plate 10.
As an article of manufacture, the device is shown in its complete form in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the said bands 15 and 16 terminating in laterally projecting arms or tabs 18 which are adapted to overlie the adjacent band when the two bands are operatively arranged in overlapping relation, the tabs 18 then formin loops for maintaining the ends of the ban( s 15 and .16 in sliding relations whereby the diameter of the circular member or ring thus formed is readily changed. Locking teeth 19 are provided upon adjacent surfaces of the bands 15 and 16, the band member being adapted for sl ping over the mouth-piece 14 and upon tiie pipe stem 11 when the bands are expanded and by forcibly decreasing the diameter of the rinl formed by the two bands, the free ends o the said bands will slide relatively of each other with the toothed portions 19 of each interlocking and maintaining the band members in their adjusted relations with the plate 10 securely seated in fiat engagement with the stem 11 and with inwardlv projectin pins 20 carried by the plate iirmly embe ded in the stem.
It being understood that the outer surface 21 of the plate 10 is roughened affording an advantageous match striking surface and as ositioned longitudinally upon the stem 11 in the manner hereto ore set forth this rou 4hened plate is advantageous in the stri ing of matches or lighting the tobacco positioned within the pipe bowl 13. The teeth 19 coperating with the pins 20 lock the plate 10 upon the stem 11 requiring the tabs 18 of one of the bands such as 16 to be bent outwardly and released before the late can be removed but which release o the tabs 18 will allow a relative lateral movemont ofthe band ends, thus breaking the engagement between the teeth 19.
While' the form of v.the invention herein shoivn .and described is 'What is believed to be thepreferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless tto be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportiona'nd details of construction Without departing from the spirit and scope of the int ventio'n as' hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new is l l. 'An article of manufacture consisting of amatch striker comprising a striking plate having a roughened outer surface. and being.
arcuate in transverse section, inwardly projecting pins carried adjacent the opposite4 ends of' said plate, oppositely projecting mounting bands centrally carried by the.
having interlocking teeth upon their adj acent contacting'su'rfaces, the said bands and.
said plate having overlapping end portions 2. Aue'vite jf the ciasfdesficom- Y prisng a scratchv plate; curved lb'ands'carried by opposite sides thereof With'the"ba1d ends? overlapped, the opposed faces" of Ithe over-'- 4provide engaging teeth, andtabs carried by each bund'end adapted to' be bent into en-V4 ga ement withthe opposedband end.
.n testimony whereof I aixmy signature. FRANK FRUSTAGLIO.-
