FIG. l.

WILLIAM ROY, 0F EDNBURGH, SCU'ILAND.
POSTAL CARD OB PACKET.
Application filed October 18, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROY, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 3 Alba street, Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented an Improved Postal Card or Packet, of which the following is a specification. y
rihis invention relates to that type of combined postal cards and postal packets formed or provided with a receptacle to contain small goods such as seeds and adapted for being written or printed upon.
According to this invention, my combined postal card and postal packet which is intended for the transmission of seeds, comprises two sheets of paper or cardboard, of post-card size preferably, one of which is sunk at a suitable part of it, for example by means of dies, to form a recess in it. The other sheet is flat and is gummed to the margin surrounding the recess in the aforesaid sunk sheet, like edges being together so that a receptacle is provided within the sunk portion for the seeds or material to be transmitted.
ln a modified form of the invention the sunk part is formed of the required size in the manner above described but with only a suilicient flange or margin, to serve for gumming, and it is suitably affixed at the said flange, when and where required, upon a flat card. The said sunk portions characterized by a gummed flange or margin may be sold separately.
A slit or opening is made in the sunk portion for charging the receptacle and this is sealed by means of an unfiXed gurnmed part of a partly affixed label, which may have a transparent portion for allowing the contents of the receptacle to be seen through the slit or opening.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments of my invention, in these drawings- Figure 1 represents a face view of a postal card or packet, and Fig. 2 a side or edge view thereof. Fig. 3 shows a face view of a receptacle adapted for adhesion to an ordinary post-card and Fig. 4 a central longitudinal section thereof.
In these figures A indicates a sheet of paper having a recess B sunk or otherwise formed in it and this sheet is caused to adhere at the margin surrounding the recess B to a second sheet C so that the combined sheets form a single card or packet having Specification of Letters Patent.

the recess B within it. In the wall of the recess B a slit forming a mouth or opening D is made and through this mouth the seeds o1' other materials are introduced to the receptacle, the said mouth D being afterward sealed by means of a gummed portion of the label E which may bear descriptive or other printed matter.
ln the modification illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4 the sunk recess b is formed as above described, but with only a sufficient flange or margin c to serve for gumming on its rear side so that. the gum or the like may be used for aflixing the receptacle when and where required upon a suitable card or the like 0 indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
The mouth D in the packet illustrated by Fig. l, may be a slit which is closed when the unfiXed part of the label E is stuck down, but in that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the corresponding mouth CZ is formed by removing a larger portion of the wall of the recess so that the contents of the receptacle may be visible through a transparent part f of the label e which closes the said opening.
A combined postal card and postal packet, according to this invention, may, for eX- ample, bear on its face to the right hand thereof the address and postage stamp, and to the left hand the receptacle having above it a notification denoting the contents thereof, and being covered with its sealing label, which may be marked with matter relating to the contents of the said receptacle, for eX- ample, a representation of iiowers to which the inclosed seeds relate; with the name of the flower beneath it; while at the back of the card may be printed directions for the culture of the flowers or the like to which the seeds relate, or be left blank for the reception of a Written message.
Claims l. A postal card or packet comprising in combination a sheet having an outstanding recessed portion integral therewith perforated in the outstanding wall of the recess and fixed at the inner side of its margin on a plain sheet to form a receptacle, a label aiiiXed in part to the outer side of the said recessed portion, the unfiXed part of the label being adapted for covering and sealing a perforation in the wall of said recess, substantially as described.
2. A postal card or packet comprising in combination a sheet having an outstanding recessed portion integral therewith perfo-k YY1-ated in the outstanding ivall of the recess and fixed atthe inner side of its margin on Y ing'adapted for covering and sealing a perforation in the Wall of said recess and for displaying the contents of theV receptacle, substantially as described. Y Y
.3. Areceptacle for a posta-l card or packet comprising Y1n combination Va sheet having 1an outstanding recessed portion integral Copies of'Y this patent may neV obtained for therewith perforated in the outstanding wall vof the recess and having a label in part affixed to the Outer side of seid recessed portion the unXed part of the label being 'adapted for covering and sealing a perforation in the Wall of said recess, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
