Description

F. P. SACKETT. REFLECTOR. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 25. l9l6.
1,206,033. Patented Nov. 28,1916.
FRANKLIN P. SACKETT, 013 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
nnrnnc'roa.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov, 28, 1916.
Ajaplicetion'filed January 25 1916. Serial No. 74,141.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN P. SACKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, infthe county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reflectors, of
-' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to headlights for vehicles and pertains more particularly to improvements in the reflectors of such lamps disclosed in Patent No. 1,140,189, granted to myself on March 18th, 1915.
The object of my invention is to produce a headlight for automobiles and other vehicles, from which a section of the projecting rays is removed.
Another object thereof is to produce a reflector for head-lamps of said character in which the sector of the reflector, adapted to project the rays from the burner in a direction liable to offend pedestrians or the drivers of vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, may be rendered non-reflective.-
A further object thereof is to produce a reflector of the character described, having a section which is non-reflective of the rays of light by which a selected section of the projected beam may be eliminated, and a still further object of my invention 1s to produce a more simple, cheap. and eflicient headlight of said character than has here; tofore been-attained.
To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed' out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my, nonreflective plate; and Fig. 2 is a horizon my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates tal sectional view of a head-lamp embodying the case of a lamp having the glass lens 2 therein, the reflector 3 in the back thereof and a lamp proper 4 between the lens and the reflector, which, in the embodiment shown, comprises an electric bulb suitably mounted substantially concentric of the reflector. The general construction of the lamp may be of any suitable type, and as same forms no part of my invention will not be more particularly described.
The reflector 3 as shown, is preferably concave and circular in shape, and is of suitable material and of polished finish, adapted to project the rays of light from the electric bulb 4 through the lens 2 on the opposite side thereof.
For the purpose of removing a selected section from the projected beam of light, I provide a sector 5 of non-reflective material secured upon the face of the projector. It will be appreciated that such non-reflective sector or dimmer may be attached or applied by numerous convenient means, but in the embodiment illustrated I employ,a substantially triangular plate 6, having a circular head 7 which is provided with a circular opening 8 adapted to fit over the socket 9 of the electric lamp 4. The surface or face of said sector' is substantially non-reflective and preferably absorbent of the rays of light. In order that such non-reflective sector may be rigidly held in the preferred position on the face of the reflector of ordinary construction, I provide the thumbscrew 10 adapted to bear and impinge upon the reflector and thus enable same to be adjusted as the rules of traffic may require.
The construction and operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings, and it will be appreciated that my invention may be varied and modified within a wide range, consistent with the following claim, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a vehicle lamp and a suitable source of light carried therein, of a light projecting reflector comprising a concave plate, a plate of non-reflective material carried on the face of said reflector Inieistimbny'whcreaf I hergby afim my signature m presence of two wltnesses.
FRANKLIN P. SACKETT.
