To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAY W. Borrow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Armstrong, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapersg and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to road scrapers and graders, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a road scraper and grader which is comparativelysimple and compact in construction and which includes a land side and a mold board side, which converge and form a point at the forward end of the scraper and also to pivotally connect the wing to the land side side of the scraper intermediate of its ends, which wings project outwardly from the land side side at an obtuse angle thereto for depositing snow along the side of a road when the grader or scraper is used as a snow plow or scraper, and further to provide a means for holding the pivoted wing in any position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel structure by means of which either the forward or rear end of the mold board of the scraper or grader may. be elevated for grading a road as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail ref- 7 erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved scraper. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the scraper and grader, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the mold board of the scraper and 2 the land side side of the scraper which are positioned at acute angles to each other and have their forward ends converging to form a point indicated at 3, which point is reinforced by a metallic cover 4-. A platform 6 is secured to the mold board 1 and land side 2 andextends from one to the other as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. 7 A rod 7 is swivelly connected as is shown at 8 to the mold board 1 and it has links 9 loosely connected to its free end. One of the links 9 is connected to a relatively short rod 10 which is swivelly connected as is shown at 11, to the mold board 1 adjacent to the point 3. A link 12 is connected to the link 9 and extends transversely thereto being provided for hitching a double tree to the scraper.
The runner 1a is pivotally connected as is shown at 15 to theinner surface of the mold board 1 adjacent to its end which is remote from the point 3. The runner 14: has a rod 16 connected to one end of the same which rod extends upwardly and is pivotally connected as shown; at 17 to a lever 18. The lever 18 is pivotally connected as at 19 to a standard 20, which is carried by the mold board 1. The lever 18 extends forwardly along the mold board and has a pawl 19 pivotally connected thereto which is adapted for coaction with the teeth 20 formed upon a rack bar 21, for holding the lever in various adjusted positions. The rack bar 21 is secured to the upper surface of the mold board. The pivotal movement of the lever 18 is provided for adjusting the position of the outer runner end 22 of the runner 14 for regulating the elevation of the rear or outer end of the mold board 1, as necessary under different grading conditions.
The runner 23 is pivotally connected as is shown at 24 to the land side 2 adjacent to its forward edge. The runner end 25 of the runner 23 has upstanding cars 26 formed upon its upper surface to which a bar 27 is pivotally connected. The bar 27 is in turn pivotally connected to a lever 28 which is pivoted intermediate its end as is shown at 29 to a standard 30. The bar 27 is pivotally connected to the lever 28 upon one side of its pivotal point, while the actuating handle 31 of the lever is positioned upon the opposite side of its pivotal support. The lever 31 has a pawl 32 pivotally connected thereto adjacent to its handle end, which pawl is adapted for ccaction with the teeth of a rack vol bar 33 for holding the lever in various adjuster positions, which holds the runner 23 in various adjusted positions for regulating the elevation of the forward or inner end of the mold board.
The land side 2 has a deflecting wing 35 liingedly connected thereto as is shown at 39 is connected to the mold board and is adapted for connection with an eye 40 car.- ried by the brace 37 for preventing accidental movement of the brace and consequently of the wing with respect to the grader or scraper. The hinge pin 41 which is used for connecting the sections of the hinge which connect the wings 35 to the land side is detachably mounted Within the barrels of the hinge so that when it is desired the wings 35 may be easily and quickly detached from connection with the scraper or grader.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and of the method of operation of the improved road scraper will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, and while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

In a road grader and scraper structure, the combination of a land side and a mold board side, said sides converging at their forward ends and terminating in a point, a metallic plate mounted over said point and a metallic plate secured to the lower forward edge of said mold board and extending a long distance along the outer side of the front end of said land side, means connccted to said mold board for raising the outer end of the mold board and means connected to said land side side adjacent its forward end for raising the forward end of said mold board and a defiecting wing h-ingedly connected to said mold board side and extending outwardly at an obtuse angle with respect to the mold board. 7
2. In a scraper and graded structure, the combination of a land side, a mold board side, said land side and mold board side converging and terminating in a point at their forward ends and a deflecting wing hingedly connected to said land side side and extending outwardly at an obtuse angle to the land side, and means for rigidly holding said wing in an extended position.
