Description

C. D. BENNETT.
SSSSSSSSSS D.
APPLICATION FILED MAY l2. I915. 1,205,699. Patented Nov, 21, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT @EFEQE.
CLARA D. BENNETT, OF GRESSKILL, NEW JERSEY.
DRESS-SHIELD.
Application filed May 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA D. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cresskill, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Dress-Shield, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a shield of the character mentioned with means for concealing or disguising the same; to provide means, unattached to the body of the wearer, for holding the arm portion of the shield in service position; to facilitate the adjustment of the shield in service; and to maintain the shield snugly in service position.
Drawing7a-Figure 1 is a view of a shield constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention and shown in service; Fig. 2 is a side view of a shield constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, parts of the shield being removed to show the interior construction thereof.
Dcscrz'ptz'on.As seen in the drawings, shields constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention have prima rily two portions, to wit, the body portion 7 and an arm portion 8. In the preferred form, shields are formed having a rubber insert 9, which is enveloped by coverings 10 and 11. The coverings 10 and 11 are preferably formed from a suitable fabric, the edges whereof are bound by a tape or binding 12.
To hold the body portion 7 in service position, there are provided attaching hooks 13 and 14, the former of which are suitably connected at the ends of the joined edges of the body portion 7 and arm portion 8. The hooks 14 are operatively connected with the body portion 7 by elastic straps 15, which are elongated to permit the hooks 14 to engage a belt 16 of approved construction.
The arm portion 8 is retained in service by a flexible weighted strip 17. The strip 17 comprises a series of weights 18, held in service relation by an enveloping covering or tube. The strip 17 is usually held in the arm portion 8 by being sewed therein at the Specification of Letters Patent.

lower edge thereof. It is obvious that when the shield is disposed as in service, the weighted strip draws the arm portion 8 out to cause the same to lie smoothly in the sleeve 7 of the dress for the protection of which the shield is worn. Further, it will be observed that as the arm is lifted, the weights in the end of the arm portion draw said portion away from the flesh of the arm and from the arm-pit, thereby facilitating circulation of air between the arm and portion 8, and between the armpit and the shield.
The present shield is particularly designed for use in connection with sheer or thin waists, and more especially where the sleeves of the waist are thin or transparent enough to show the arm therethrough. To avoid the somewhat unsightly appearance of the shields, the arm portions 8 are colored or formed from a material the color of which resembles, or is closely allied to, the color of the skin. The covering 10 of the body portion 7 on the other hand, is made from white fabric if the corset-cover or garment under which it is placed, is white. It the corsetcover or garment is made of another color, as, for instance, where a sheer bodice of black chiffon is used, the covering 10 of the body portion 7 wouldbe preferably formed of black fabric. While the covering 10 of the body portion 7 may be thus varied, the covering 11 of the arm portion is preferably pink, or the color of the skin.
Claim:
A dress shield comprising a body portion: an arm portion, said body portion being colored in correspondence with the garment under which it is to be worn, and said arm portion being colored to correspond with the skin of the arm over which it is worn; a plurality of elastic members for holding said body portion in outspread position; and weights for holding said arm portion in depressed, extended position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence o1 two subscribing witnesses.
CLARA D. BENNETT.
