119 all whom it may concern V Be it known that I, THOMAS Mrrorrnnma citizen of the United States, residing at Melcher, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fenders for railway car wheels and the primary object is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to the ournal box and extends in front of the railway car wheel for effectively preventing the obstructions in the path of the wheel from derailing the railway car.
As a further object of the invention the device contemplates the provision of a fenderi which will be positioned in a manner for thrusting any object, that should accidentally be placed in the path of the wheel, ahead of the wheel or to one side thereof.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device attached to a journal box. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete attachment.
The car wheel A is provided with the usual journal box B. The, fender 1 consists of the curved plate 2 which conforms:
to the curve of the periphery of the car wheel and which is adapted to be spaced a slight distance therefrom, the lower end 3 of the plate being reversely curved to extend downwardly toward the railway rail C. The end of the curved portion 3 terminates at a point slightly above the top of the railway rail 0. Extending along one edge of the curved plate 1 is a retaining flange 4 which is disposed at right angles to the plate and is curved in exactly the same manner as the plate.
Mounted on the bottom of the journal box 13 is a supporting bar 5 provided with apertures 6 through which the fasteningbolts"? extend. The opposite end of the supporting bar 5 is twisted at right angles and has its extreme end fastened to the upper end of the flange 4 by a rivet or fastening bolt 8. Fastened below the supporting bar 5 is a retaining bar 9' which is also provided with apertures alining with the apertures 6 and through which the bolts 7 extend.
The ends of the bolts 7 receiving the fasten 111g nuts which bear against the bottom side of the retaining bar 9 thereby holding both the supporting bar and the retaining bar in contact beneath the journal B. One end of the retaining bar 9 is bent downwardly at an angle and twisted at right angles and has its extreme end fastened to the flange 4, intermediate the end of the flange, by the fastening bolt 1.0.

pointed out that the simpleness of construc- I tion is a feature which adds materially to the eflectiveness of the device inasmuch as it may be quickly removed from the journal box or easily attached thereto when such an event becomes necessary. The free end of the curved portion-atthe lower end of the plate 2 is disposed as close to the top of the rail as safety will allow and the slightest obstruction on the rail will be swept for ward out of the path of the wheel.
In reduction to practice I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings and referredto in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most etficient and practicable; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire toemphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangements of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a car wheel and a car wheel journal box, of a wheel fender supported from the bottom of said journal box, said fender comprising a curved plate conforming to the curve of the periphery of the wheel and terminating in a reversely curved portion at its lower end, and supporting means carried by said journal box and connected to said-fender for disposing the lower end of the fender in close proximity to the top of a rail.
2. The combination with a car wheel and a car wheel journal box, of a wheel fender supported from the bottom of said journalbox, said fender comprising a curved plate conforming to the curve of the periphery of,
in close proximity to the top of the rail, :1 right angularly disposed flange formed integrally with and extending along the outer edge of said curved plate, and supporting means fastened to said flange and connected to said journal box for holding said fender in close proximity to the periphery of the car wheel.
3. The combination with a car wheel and a car wheel journal box, of a wheel fender supported from the bottom of said journal box, said fender comprising a'curved plate conforming to the curve of the periphery of the wheel and terminating in a reversely curved portion at its lower end, the end of said rerersely curved portion being disposed in close proximity to the top of the rail, a right angularly disposed flange formed integrally with and extending along the outer edge of said curved plate, a supporting bar formed of a flat bar having one end secured to the bottom of the journal box and its opposite end twisted at right angles and secured to said flange at the upper end thereof, and retaining means secured to one end of said supporting bar and to said flange for retaining the end of said fender in position adjacent the top of a railway rail.
4;. The combination with a car wheel and a car wheel journal box, of a wheel fender supported from the bottom of said journal box, said tender comprising a curved plate conforming to the curve of the periphery of the wheel and terminating in a reversely curved portion at its lower end, the endof said reversely curved portion being disposed in close proximity to the top of the rail, a right angularly disposed flange formed integrally with and extending along the outer edge of said curved plate, a supporting bar formed of a flat bar having one end secured to the bottom of the journal box and its opposite end twistedat right angles and secured to said flange at the upper end thereof, a retaining bar formed of a flat bar 113V: ing one end secured to said supporting bar and its opposite end bent downwardly at an an le and twisted at right angles and se cured to said flange intermediate the ends of said flange.
5. The combination with a car wheel and a car wheel journal box, of a wheel fender supported from said journal box, including a curved plate conforming to the curve of the periphery of the wheel and terminating in a reversely curved portion at its lower end, the extreme terminal of said lower end being disposed in close proximity to the'top of a rail. 7
