Description

Patented Nov.' 21, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY SCHNEIDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21', 191e.
Application filed November 1 1,` 1915. Serial No. 60,858.
To all 'whom it may] concern Beit known that I, HENRY SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful .Improvements in IVindow- Cleaners, of which the following is a specication.
The 4main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of window cleaner and particularly one which is'specially adaptedfor'use on the motormanls window of-a street car; and to provide a window cleaner that is simple and durable and that can be readily attached to the window l'frame of any car without altering the construction of either the frame or the sash. An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a street car body with lthe improved window cleaner fastened in lposition on-the .frame of Y the motormans window. Fig. 2 is aA front elevation of the cleaner drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary detail showing the' supporting mechanism for one end of the squeegee. Fig.. 4 is a view taken on the line A--A of Fig. 3.
In the construction shown in 'the drawings thewindow frame '-1' of a street car 2 is 'shown provided with the improved cleaner `attached adjacent to the4 sill thereof. The cleaner comprises a pair of supports 4 which The operation of the device shown is as follows z-In order to clean the Window the operator need merely lower the window and return it to its closed position. The squeegee requires no attention and operates to wipe the window both -in its downward and its vupward movement, regardless ofwhat may be the particular arrangement for raising and lowering the window. The springs y 9' urge the sq'ueegee into contact with the window paneat all times, and the 'pins 9 squeegee to follow the window in case the arrangement is such as to require the window to be shifted out lof its normal plane and bifurcated guide members 7 permit the for the purpose of lowering it. The heads or shoulders at vthe outer ends", ofthe pins l0 limit the movement of the squeegee in its guides, so that it cannot become accidentally may be readily attached by screws to the pivotal movement in an upward direction against the action of springs 12acting between pins 13 on the supports 4 and pins 14 on lower arms 7 of the guide members 5. Movement of the guide members and disengaged therefrom.
In certain window, constructions which are now in common use on street cars, the lower edge of the window rests in a grooved ledge on the sill when the window is in its closed position and the sill is provided with a pocket rearward of this groove into which the window sash may be lowered for the purpose of opening the window, such pocket being normally closed by la hinged sill section which in its closed position bears against the lower part of the window sash and locks thesame in its closed position.
The action of the squeegee is suchtliat i the window is wiped as it-descendsinto the pocket and is again wiped as it is liftedfrom the pocket. During the\ operation of lifting the window and sliding it forward to its closed position, the squeegee swings upward and slides in the bifurcated guides, but
is held into contact with the window by the springs 12 and 9, as will be readily seen -from a consideration of the drawings.
squeegee in a' downward direction is limited by pins 15 on the supports 4,
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shownl and described, it will be understood that some of the details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing" from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim: .Y l 1. A window cleaner, lcomprising supports, bifurcated guide members pivotally mounted on said supports, yielding means for resisting pivotal movement of said guide members, a squeegee slidably mounted on I said guide members-,and a spring beziring Y between said support andsqueegee for shift-v pivotal movement of Said guide members, a
squeegee mounted in said guide members, a,
pin mounted on said squegee sind passingpin for through a 111g on said support, a spring surrounding said pin and bearing between said A squeegee and lug'for shifting said squeegee.
in saidA guide members, Vand means on said limiting the movement of said squeegee. E f Signed" at Chicago this 27th day of Oct.;
