MOTOR-SLEIGI-I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed. May 8, 1916. Serial No. 96,184.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known thatI, CLARENCE C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor- Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and usefu improvements in motor sleighs and consists of a simple and eflicient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying draw ings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the motor sleigh. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view through the springpressed mechanism which controls the spur driving wheels. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view in elevation of a worm drivengear wheel and attachments. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail in elevation of a part of the motor sleigh, showing the means for holding the runners thereon.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of a motor sleigh having stub axles B carried by the ends' of the rocker R. Said rear axle is provided with a driving shaft D, driven by suitable gear mechanism with differential D of the motor and fixed to each end of the driving shaft is a sprocket Wheel F. A rock shaft H is journaled in suitable bearings upon the frame'and has collars J and L fixed thereto, the former-of which has integral sprocket teeth J about its circumference and which are engaged by a worm wheel O-upon the control shaft 0, which latter is provided with a beveled gear 0 in mesh with a similar beveled gear 0 upon the hollow shaft 0 which has fixed thereto the control wheel 0 A shaft Q passes through the hollow shaft 0 and has an angled end g9? hQW,n, the stub axles B having rearwardly extending arms Q, to which is connected a link R A link Q connects the link R with the angle arm or rod Q. The forward portion of the sleigh is provided with a rock beam R which allows the front sleigh free action up and down over rough roads. A brace R serves to strengthen the spindles carrying the runners. Caps G are screwed on to the end of the spindles, it being understood that the runners will be slipped over the axles in a similar manner as automobile wheels are placed upon axles. A suitable pedestal R is fastened at its upper end to the body of the frame and carries the stub shaft at its :the spring extends into the hollow arm G of the housing, the end of the arm being bent at an angleas at G and engaging a hanger arm T which cooperates with a second hanger arm T in which a shaft T is journaled and which latter has fixed thereto a spur driving Wheel T. A sprocket wheel T is fixed to the shaft T and has sprocket chain connection T with a sprocket Wheel T fixed to the driving shaft D. It will be noted that there are two of said spur driving wheels similarly mounted and driven by sprocket wheels at the ends of the driving shaft.
My motor sleigh is provided with an emergency brake consisting of a friction band for engagement with the rear driving shaft and controlled by means of the rod X pivoted to the band and which in turn is pivotally connected to the lever X positioned within convenient reach of the driver of the device.
In operation, it will be noted that, by the provision of the control wheel 0 the spur wheels may be raised or lowered to regulate the driving of the sleigh, this being accomplished by the lug upon the collar coming in contact with the lug upon the housing causing the latter to rotate with the shaft carrying the housing and causing the spur driving wheels to be raised or lowered accordingly. The forward runners are at all times under the control of the operator through the medium of the steer ing wheel and connections therewith, an
emergency friction brake being provided also within easy access of the driver of the apparatus.
What I claim to be new is i I 1. A motor sleigh comprising a frame with forward and rear axles and runners thereon, a driving shaft, swinging hanger arms, spur driving wheels carried thereby, gear connections between the driving shaft and spur wheel, a rock shaft, spring-actuated housings engaging said hanger arms, and means for rocking the housings to cause the spur wheels to be raised and lowered.
- 2. A motor sleigh comprising a frame with forward and rear axles and runners thereon, a driving shaft, swinging hanger arms, spur driving wheels carried thereby, gear connections between the driving shaft and spur'wheel, a rock shaft, spring-actuated housings engaging said hanger arms, a control shaft and gear connections between the same and one of said housings for causing the latter to swing to raise or lower the spur driving wheel.
3. A motor sleigh comprising a frame,
with forward and rear axles and runners thereon, a driving shaft, swinging hanger arms, spur driving wheels carried thereby, gear connections between the driving shaft and spur wheels, a rock shaft, collars fixed thereto, housings upon the rock shaft and having ends engagingv said hangers, springs fastened to the housings and collars, and
control mechanism for rocking one of said and spur wheels, a rock shaft, collars fixed thereto, one of said collars having sprocket teeth about its circumference, a pin projecting from the collar having said sprocket teeth, housings upon the shaft, a pin projecting from one of said housings and in the path of the pin on said collar, springs, each having one end fastened to a collar and its other end to an arm of the housing, said spring fastened to said hangers, a control lever, and connections between the same and the sprocket teeth upon said collar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
