To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD L. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail (lhalrs, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail chairs and more particularly to a rail chair that will act as a combination rail chair and anti-creeping device for railway rails so that any lateral or longitudinal creeping of the rails, when expansion occurs therein, will be prevented.
A further object of the 1I1V8I1131OI1 1S the provision of a rail chair whereby rail ends may be joined together without the use of fish bolts in a manner that will obvlate the use of bolts for the ends of the rail.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rail chair which is adapted to be used in connection with guard rails wherever it is necessary to employ the guard rails in constructing the railway.
A further object of thisinventionis the provision of a rail chair which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which de vices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the 1nvent1on and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which, 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device in use. Fig.2 is a top plan view of the rail chair, the rail being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the interlocking members. Fig. 5 is a slightly modified form of my invention showing it applied to a guard rail. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the modified form.
The device consists of two inter-changeable duplicate members A and B. Each member consists of a plate 1 which is substantially L-shaped in formation and is provided with a series of serrations 2 at one end. The opposite end of the plate 1, and at one side of the center line of the plate, is provided with a laterally extending buffer 3, the free end being provided with a cylindrical extension 4. The wide end of the plate, at a point adjacent the buffer 3 is provided with an aperture 5 through which securing bolts 6 are adapted to be extended for securely fastening the base plate to the tie. A rib 7 is formed on the plate 1 for engagement with the base flange of the rail.
The lower face 8 of the extending end of: the buffer 3,is adapted to overlie the base flange of the rail 1; a shoulder is thereby provided where the face 8 joins with the base plate 1, for the opposite edge of the base flange of the rail to'engage. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the railis diagonally cut at each end of the meeting sections 0 and D of the rail and the webs are provided with apertures 10 through whicph the projections 1 are adapted to exten In order that the rail may be secured to the tie in a manner that will prevent the creeping thereof either longitudinal or lateral, calks 11 are provided on the under .face of the base of each member and are driven into the tie when the device is mounted upon the tie. When the members are assembled for joining two ends of rail sections together, the parts are placed in position as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing and the serrations 2 will register with the serrations 12 which are formed on the under face of the plate 1 at one side of the wide end thereof so that the securing bolt 6 may be passed through the opening 5 and through the opening 13 which is provided in the narrow end of the plate, thereby causing the serrations to interlock and the whole device secured rigidly to the tie.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, I have shown a modified form of the rail chair as used wherever a guard rail is employed in the construction of the railway. The mem-' bers are inter-changeable and are of the same general design as the one above described, excepting that the base plate 1 is of a greater length. A spacing block 14 is adapted to be placed between the. webs of the guard rail E and the main rail F, and one of its side faces is curved to conform to the curve of the guard rail E. The spacing block 14 is provided with recesses 15 which are designed to receive the ends of the projections 4:.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable rail chair has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described in cluding a base plate of rectangular form comprising duplicate members adapted to interlock, a bufier formed on each of said duplicate members and integrally formed with the top surface of the members, the said buffers extending from the end edges of the base plate and terminating approximately at the center of the said base plate, the said terminals of the buflers extending in opposite directions and disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the said base plate, serrations formed on the upper side of one member and on the lower face of the other member.
2. A device of the character described including a base plate comprising duplicate interlocking members, the said members being substantially L-shaped and adapted to be assembled to form a rectangular base plate, a pair of buffers, each formed with a cylindrical extension on the upper surface of the enlarged end of each L-shaped plate, the said buffer being wide where it merges into the surfaces of the plate and restricted in size at its opposite end for strengthening said bufi'er, projections formed. on each of said buflers at the terminals thereof and fastening elements for holding said interlocking members in locked position.
