BLANK FOR FORMING STANDARDS.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14., .1916.
Application filed Febru'ary 20, 1915. Serial No. 9,713.
' residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanks for Forming Standards; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to animproved blank for forming the body of a standard which has a vertically arranged slideway at one side thereof and is more especially adapted to be used as a support for a vertically adjustable object, such, for instance, as an adjustable bracket.
The primary object of this invention is to produce an inexpensive metal blank which can be readily bent into the shape required to form the body of a standard employed in supporting a bracket adapted to engage the aforesaid slideway of said standard.
With this object in view, and to' the end of realizing any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in a blank comprising a rolled metal bar having the configuration and features hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a blank embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan relative to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows how the blank illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is bent to form the body of a standard. Fig. 4 is a top plan relative to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a, vertical section on line 5-5, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a vertical section corresponding with Fig. 5, except that Fig. 6 illustrates a plate adapted, when the blank has been operated on as required to form the body of the standard illustrated in Fig. 3, to be seated on shoulders with which the blank is provided. Fig. 7 is a vertical section corresponding with Fig. 6 except that Fig. 7 shows a vertically adjustable bracket secured in the desired adjustment to said standard by means of a suitably applied bolt and a nut on said bolt. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on line 8-8, Fig. 7. In Figs. 1 and 2 portions are broken away to reduce the size of the drawings.
My improved blank for forming the body of .a standard which has a vertically arranged slideway consists of a T-bar which has its flange 10 provided centrally between the ends of the bar with a recess 12 and has three webs 13 extending and spaced l0ngi-' longitudinally of the flange 10 and from one side of the central web to the adjacent longitudinal edge of the flange. The two outer webs preferably extend from opposite ends respectively of the flange 10 to the recess 12 which therefore extends from the inner end of one to the inner end of the other of said outer webs. The outer webs are shown arranged centrally between the longitudinal edges of the flange 10 and in line endwise, and the central web is somewhat shorter than and arranged between the ends of the recess 12 and in lineendwise with the outer webs and spaced substantially equidistantly from the end walls of said recess. Adjacent end-portions of adjacent webs are gradually and correspondingly reduced in width toward each other and have their sloping edges 14, which are formed by the gradual reduction in width of their said end-portions, arranged at an angle of forty-five degrees to the adjacent or inner side of the flange 10 so as to properly space the central web from the outer web. Each outer web is provided at its longitudinal edge with a shoulder 15 which faces in the direction of the inner end of said web and is arranged a short distance or spaced from the sloping edge 14 of the inner end-portion of said web. Each outer web is wider between its shoulder 15 and the outer end of the web than between said shoulder and the sloping edge 14 of the inner end-portion of said web, and the central web preferably corresponds in width-between. its sloping edges 14 to the width of said outer web between said sloping edge 14 and said shoulder of said outerweb. The outer end-portions of the. bar composing my improved blank are shown bent in the direction in which the outer side of the flange 10 faces.
A blank embodying my invention, it will be observed, is readily bent between adjacent webs 13 thereof in the direction required to bring the sloping edge 14 of each outer web of the blank into contact with the adjacent sloping edge 14 of the central web of the blank, as shown in Fig. 3 and as required to form the body of a standard, and it will also be observed that when the blank illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 has been bent into the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the end walls of the recess 12 face upwardly so as to avoid obstruction or interference with the slideway 16 formed at the adjacent side of the webs. It will also be observed that when the blank has been bent into the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4L the shoulders 15 of the outer webs 13 face upwardly and are adapted to form seats for a plate 17 shown applied in Fig. 6, which plate together with a bolt and nut hereinafter referred to are employed in clamping a bracket adapted to engage the aforesaid slideway in the desired adjustment to said bracket, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Referring to said Figs. 7 and 8 it will be observed that B indicates a horizontally arranged top or seat-member of a vertically adjustable bracket, which seat-member is mounted on and suitably secured to a vertically arranged plate 6 which engages said slideway and forms a portion of said bracket and is provided centrally between its side edges with a vertically arranged slot 20. The slide-forming portion 6 of said bracket is arranged between the plate 17 and the head (Z of a horizontally arranged bolt which has said head overlapping the adjacent side of said slide-forming portion as shown in Fig. 8 and has its shank D extending through the aforesaid slot and through the plate 17, and a nut E is screwed onto the free end of said shank. Obviously upon manipulating the nut to tighten it against the plate 17 the bracket is secured in the desired adjustment, and upon manipulating said nut to loosen it relative to said plate the bracket is rendered free to be readjusted. Although I have shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the manner of ap plying a vertically adjustable bracket to the standard illustrated in Fig. 3 it will of course be understood that my invention consists essentially in the blank illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and that said blank because of the special meritorious features hereinbefore described can be readily bent into the shape required to form a strong standard provided at one side with the slideway 16 for receiving the bracket or Copies of this patent may be obtained for object which is to be adjusted up and down the standard.
I would also remark that the outer webs, upon bending the blank into the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, are preferably tied together a suitable distance below the shoulders 15 by a suitably applied tie-bar 18 shown in dotted lines Fig. 3, and shoes 20, as shown in dotted lines, are applied to the ends of the blank to facilitate the securing of the resulting standard to a floor or other object.
What I claim is 1. A blank for forming the body of a standard, said blank consisting of a T-bar which has its flange provided centrally be tween the ends of the bar with a recess extending longitudinally of the flange, said bar having three webs extending longitudinally of the bar and arranged in line endwise, the aforesaid recess being arranged at one side of the central web, said central web being shorter than the outer webs and arranged between the ends of said recess, and adjacent webs being spaced at the op posite edges of their adjacent ends.
A blank for forming the body of a standard, said blank consisting of a T-bar which has its flange provided centrally between the ends of the bar with a recess and has three webs extending and spaced longitudinally of the bar and arranged in line endwise, said recess extending longitudinally of said flange and being arranged at one side of the central web, said central web being somewhat shorter than and arranged between the ends of said recess, adjacent end-portions of adjacent webs being gradually reduced in width toward each other and having sloping edges formed by the gradual reduction in width of said endportions, each outer web being provided at its longitudinal edge with a shoulder which faces in the direction of the inner end of said web and is spaced from the sloping edge of the inner end-portion of said web.
In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing speeification, in the presence of two witnesses.
