Description

mogul PATENT OFFIGE.
THOMAS DONAHY, OF EMPIRE CITY, NEVADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY RAIL-CHAIRS.
Specification forming pgrt of Letters Patent N o. 120,421, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS DONAJIY, of Empire City, in the county of Orrnsby and State of Nevada, have invented anew and useful Improve- "Inent in Railroad Rail-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of my iinproved chair taken through the line a; x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the saine.
Similar letters of referen ce indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved railroad rail-chair designed for use the length of a rail from the switch-chair, to avoid the necessity of frequently cutting the rail to allow the switch to work; and it consists in the chair, constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the chair, into which. the ends of the rails B O enter. al is a bar or partition formed across the cavity of the chair A. near the end furthest from the switch, for the end of the rail B to rest against to prevent the said rail froIn being crowded toward the switch and thus interfering with its proper working. D are short sections sawn from a rail, and which are designed to be of difierentlengths-as, for instance, half an inch, an inch, an inch and a half, and two inches.
These pieces are put in and taken out, when required by the contraction and expansion of the rails, through an opening in the side ofthe chair, which opening is closed by a piece, a?. The piece a2 issecnred in place by a bolt passing horizontally through the base of the piece a? and through the base of the chair A; or by a spike passing vertically through the base of the piece a? and through the base of the chair and driven into the tie. By this construction, as the rails expand and contract one or more of the pieces I) may be taken out and put in to keep the space between the rails B O properly filled, and at the saine time to prevent the rail O from being pushed toward and crowding the switch-rail and thus interfering with its proper working. The chairs A are designed to be cast right hand and left hand, so that the detachable piece a2 may always be upon the outer side of the rail.
If desired, the chair may be 1n ade with a righthand and a left-hand opening, the bar or partition being between them to getthe doubled length of exten sion and contraction, thus giving a greater scope for adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, I cla-ini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The chair A, .constructed with an opening to receive blocks D between rails B C, and with a detachable piece, a2, in the side thereof, and with a stop, al, so that said pieces D may be removed or inserted, in the nianner described.
THOS. DONAHY.
