Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, *ltlifi.
Application filed January 22, 1916. Serial No. 73,522.
object of the invention being to provide an improved joint for joining sections of double-faced corrugated paperboard, having a strength equal to that of the board itself.
It has been the common practice in the manufacture of. corrugated paperboard boxes to join the ends of the box blank by means of a tape adhesively applied to the lining sheets at one side only of the board. A joint formed in this manner, however, is obviously the weakest part of the box, and in order to provide an improved joint having a strength equal to that of the board itself, it
has heretofore been proposed to utilize the material of the board itself in forming the oint, as by reducing in cross-section the ends or sections to be joined, then placing the reduced portions in overlapping relation, and then pasting or otherwise securing said portions together to form a lap joint. EXamples of such form of joint are disclosed in Patents Nos. 1,101,927 and 1,101,928, issued to F. (1. Feeley and myself June 80, 1914;.
In accordance with my present invention,1 provide a joint for double-faced corrugated paperboard by forming a lap joint between the lining sheets at one side of the sections to be joined and a taped joint between the lining sheets at the opposite side of said sections, the two joints thus provided between ,the lining sheets at opposite sides of the board forming, together, a joint of desired strength for the board.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a onerpiece box or container made from double-faced corrugated paperboard and having a joint formed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail of the joint; and Fig. 8 is a similar view of one end of one of the board sections,.showing the first step in the operation of pre paring it for the joint to be formed.
Similar reference characters designate like parts in the. several figures of the drawings.
22 designate end sect-ions of doublefaced corrugated paperboard suitable for the purpose of forming my imprbved joint. This means that the filler f is of suitable material and that the inner and outer lining sheets, and 0, have considerable strength suflicient to enable them to form, when com: bined in the manner hereinafter set forth, a oint that will be as strong as the board it self.
In the present case, one of the sections 2 is skived along one edge and a portion of the filler and one of the lining sheets, as indi cated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, is removed, to provide a long projecting section 3 of lining sheet, after which the board sections are mated with the unremoved portion 3 of the lining sheet of one section overlapping the adjacent lining sheet of the other section and firmly secured thereto, as by an adhesive, and with the adjacent ends of the lining sheets at the opposite side of the board sections preferably meeting in a butt-joint and connected by a fastening strip 4 firmly secured thereto, also preferably by an adhesive. This fastening strip 4 may be formed of either paper or fabric, but in either case it will preferably be formed of a material having a strength at least equal to that of the lining sheets to which it is se cured.
Thedescribed connections between the lining sheets at the opposite sides of the board sections combine to provide a joint for the sections having a strength equal to that of the board itself. As'here shown, the lap joint is formed between the outer lining sheets and the taped joint between the inner lining sheets. This arrangement, however, obviously may be reyerscd if so desired with out in any way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:-"
1. A joint for double-faced corrugated patening strip secured to and connecting, the adjacent ends of the lining sheets at the opposite side of the board sections.
2. A joint for double-faced corrugated paperboard, comprising a pair of complementary,- board sections one of which has a ,portion of the filler and one of the lining slie'ets removed, the sections being mated with the unremoved portion of the lining sheet of one section overlapping and secured to the adjacent portion of the lining sheet of the other section at one side of the latter and with the adjacent ends of the lining sheets at the opposite side of the sections meeting in a butt-joint, and a fastening strip secured to and connecting the adjacent ends of the'lining sheets at said butto nt.
3. A joint for doublesfaced corrugated paperboard, comprising a pair of complementary board sections disposed in the same with the adjacent ends of the lining sheets at the opposite side of the sections meeting in a butt-joint, and a fastening strip adhesively secured to and connecting the adjacent ends of the lining sheets at said butt joint.
